It's been a week since the Quincy Notre Dame girls basketball team played. The rust showed Monday at The Pit. Even though QND never trailed, the Lady Raiders seemed human — maybe even beatable — in their 60-41 win over Clark County. QND ended the first half with only a slight edge in the turnover battle — committing 10 and only forcing 12 miscues. "(Clark County) did a good job defensively on us at times," QND coach Eric Orne said. "... We kind of fought through our sluggishness and came away with a good victory against a good team." QND (4-0) scored the first eight points of the game and never trailed. Each team scored eight points in the final 4 minutes, 17 seconds of the opening quarter, giving QND a 16-8 lead after one quarter. QND's Chloe Barnes scored 10 of her 18 points in the first half, leading the Lady Raiders to a 38-19 halftime advantage. "You could kind of tell in the warmups that the intensity wasn't there," Barnes said. "We still did a lot of things right. But we just weren't as fine-tuned as we usually are." Clark County looked like the better team during most of the third quarter. Karlee Gengenbacher (11 points) made QND's first shot of the second half to give the Lady Raiders a 40-19 advantage. Clark County (2-3) answered by scoring the next eight points, cutting the deficit to 40-27 with 2:20 left in the third quarter. Daryle Goldie, Kassidy Shuman, Brittany Logsdon and Brooke Wheeler all had baskets for the Lady Indians during that run. "I thought Clark County came out and really established themselves," Orne said. "Our enthusiasm and overall adrenaline wasn't where it needed to be tonight — where we want it to be." QND followed Clark County's run by outscoring the Lady Indians 9-2. Despite one of its worst quarters of the season, QND still managed to outscore Clark County by a point, 11-10, in the third quarter. Clark County coach Phillip Klett said his team needed to play four quarters to have a shot at topping the undefeated Lady Raiders on their home court. "Once we settled down in the second half our effort was much better," Klett said. "We looked a little timid and I think part of that was a good job by (QND)." Shuman led the Lady Indians with 12 points in the loss. Notes: Clark County beat QND 43-42 on Nov. 24, 2006 at the Culver-Stockton College Shootout. ... Creighton assistant women's basketball coach Steve Huber was in attendance. Huber said he was there to watch Barnes play. ... Quincy University head women's basketball coach J.D. Gravina was also in attendance. Both QND's Renita Bunte (10 points) and Clark County's Shuman have signed to play for the Lady Hawks next year. ... The two teams shot a combined 5 for 16 at the free-throw line.
