QU nearly steals second set in GLVC loss

EAST PEORIA, Ill. -- The Quincy University volleyball team's season ended with a 25-17, 28-26, 25-18 loss to Lewis in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinals Friday afternoon at EastSide Centre.

The Hawks, the No. 4 seed in the West Division, finish the season 16-15. Lewis (25-6) is the No. 1 seed in the East.

QU had only seven kills in the first set and finished the match with 33. The Hawks hit .133 in the match.

The Flyers won the first set handily, then went on a 9-2 run to take a 14-11 lead in the second set. The Hawks rallied to go ahead 19-18 lead on a kill by Bekah Raebel, one of eight she would have in the set.

The teams then traded points until the Hawks had set point at 24-23. The Flyers answered with two straight to take a 25-24 lead, but Raebel came up with back-to-back kills to give QU a 26-25 lead. The Flyers scored the next three points to take the set.

The Hawks led as late as 15-14 in the third set, but the Flyers went on a 3-0 run and never gave up the lead.

Raebel led QU with 12 kills, Taylor McMonagle had 11 digs and Emily Lindemulder had six blocks. MIranda Rodriguez handed out 18 assists for the Hawks.

Friday's match was QU's first GLVC Tournament appearance since 2011.
