SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The Quincy University men's volleyball team lost twice to nationally-ranked opponents in its opening day of competition Friday.
The Hawks lost to 14th-ranked Cal-State Northridge 25-16, 25-19, 25-23. David Siebum led QU with nine kills, and Jarrod Kelso had seven. Thane Fanfulik had 13 assists for the Hawks.
In the second game, Quincy won the first set before losing to No. 9-ranked Stanford 20-25, 25-11, 25-22, 25-14.
The Hawks hit .286 in the opening set, during which they never trailed after taking a 6-2 lead. Kelso and Jacob Sheets capped the run with a double block. QU led by as many as six points in the set, 22-16, after the first of Fanfulik's four service aces. Sheets closed the frame with a kill.
QU had leads of 13-8 and 21-20 in the third set but couldn't hold on. It never led in the fourth set.
Siebum and Kelso led the Hawks with eight kills each. Fanfulik had 27 assists, four blocks and four aces.
