QUINCY -- The case of a Quincy man who faces two counts of first-degree murder was set for review after a brief hearing Tuesday morning in Adams County Circuit Court.

Derek T. McKenzie, 30, will return to court Jan. 19, when Judge Debra Wellborn will hear motions on whether his defense team can hire a consulting psychiatric expert to help prepare for trial.

Wellborn denied the defense request in November but asked that a proposal be submitted detailing the scope of the service. Public Defenders Babs Brennan and John Clark are seeking an expert to help review hundreds of pages of medical and psychiatric history notes.

McKenzie is charged in the Dec. 7, 2015, beating death of 48-year-old Billy Graham. He is accused of beating Graham with his fists and a metal clamp inside an apartment above Izzey's Bar and Grill, 601 N. Fifth.

He is being held in the Adams County Jail on $5 million bond.
