MOUNT STERLING, Ill. -- Addi Miller didn't do anything fancy. She simply stayed in control.
The sophomore pitcher struck out nine, stranded three runners in scoring position and guided the Unity softball team to the championship of the Class 1A Brown County Regional with a 2-0 victory Thursday against Brown County.
"It was huge for her to stay consistent at the mound," said Unity coach Greg Hildebrand, whose team advances to the Calhoun Sectional next Wednesday. "She did a dang good job."
Miller showed her composure early.
With two outs in the top of the first inning, Brown County's Alissa Hodge singled to left field and Kylie Moorman followed by drawing a four-pitch walk. However, Hailey Alsup struck out on three pitches to end the threat.
The Mustangs (16-6) seized the moment. With one out in the bottom of the first, Jordan Hildebrand homered to center field for a 1-0 lead.
"If they are going to make a mistake, make ‘em pay," the Unity coach said of what he told his daughter.
The Mustangs took advantage of a mistake again in the third. With two outs, Haley Miller reached on an error, Hildebrand was hit by a pitch and Addi Miller singled up the middle to drive in the run.
Addi Miller did the rest. She allowed only one hit in second through fifth innings and avoided trouble in the sixth. Hodge walked to lead off the inning, went to second on a passed ball and was there with one out when Haley Alsup reached on an infield single.
Miller got Bre Gooding to pop out on the infield and Hallie Laning to fly out to center field to end the threat.
A two-out single in the top of the seventh by Chloe Alsup was erased when Miller got Mariah Markert to ground out to shortstop to end the game.
Hodge kept the Hornets (19-9) in the game by allowing only four hits and walking none while striking out three.
