Republicans to blame for Illinois, national budget woes

To The Herald-Whig:

Did you hear about what happened in Illinois? A few bold Republicans bucked their rich Republican governor's veto and joined Democrats to finally pass legislation that will avoid financial disaster.

One hopes, for the sake of financial sanity in government, more Republicans will forsake fealty to the rich and think more about the rest of us 99 percent.

For those of you who bathe daily in Republican orthodoxy and ruminate ceaselessly about deficits and spending, consider:

º Large deficits first began to characterize the American economy with President Reagan.

º It wasn't until President Clinton that our national deficit turned to a surplus.

º George W. Bush almost magically turned a surplus of 2.4 percent of GDP into a 3.6 percent of GDP deficit.

º President Obama inherited the Great Recession that was really put in motion with the deregulation and tax cuts initiated by Reagan and continued by George W. Bush.

º President Barack Hussein Obama, with stimulus spending, avoided a worldwide Depression. The amount of stimulus was kept modest by a Republican Congress, which most economists hold as the reason for a slow recovery.

Republicans are due for a reckoning in 2018. Tick-tock.
