We need another summer holiday,
And, yes, I have an idea about what we should celebrate.
First of all, just to review: We have Memorial Day weekend to kick off the summer, followed by the always-satisfying Fourth of July.
And then what?
There's always been some sort of gentleman's agreement that Labor Day weekend is the final fling of summer, but by early September school is in session and it's football season. You can't have a summer holiday during football season.
My suggestion is a last major celebration in August before the kids go back to school.
We need one last major blowout when families gather for burgers on the grill and slip-and-slides in the backyard.
My idea is either National Elvis Day or National Elvis Weekend, to be celebrated around Aug. 16, the day the King died in 1977 at age 42.
The nation's most iconic entertainment figure deserves this kind of tribute.
Much like all Fourth of July celebrations have fireworks, all National Elvis Day/Weekend activities would include musical tributes.
In Quincy, we could all gather along the riverfront for a day-long festival to hear combinations of Elvis personators and Elvis music being blared from loudspeakers, all the way from Clat Adams to All America parks.
Just imagine, thousands of people uniting for the "Just a hunk, a hunk of burning love" chorus!!
And just when the crowd is at a fever pitch, on comes "(I Can't Help) Falling in Love with You."
Those same thousands of people would (tearfully) banding together for, " ... Wise men say, only fools rush in ... and I can't help falling in love with you-u-u-u."
Somebody pass me a tissue.
Can't you just see all the vendor stands selling little Elvis dolls and peanut butter and banana sandwiches?
The weekend, I'm sure, would be full of concerts and assorted tributes. The Quincy Public Library could host a seminar on the life and times of Elvis Aron Presley and one of the theaters in town could have a 24-hour festival of the King's movies.
We all need to call and write Mayor Kyle Moore. Let's see if we can get this ball rolling.
And if you're not an Elvis fan, I also have a few other ideas for an August holiday.
º National Sean Connery Day: The world's all-time coolest secret agent, James Bond, was born Aug. 25. We could actually start this celebration the first of the month and have one of the movie houses show a 007 film nightly. There are more than 20 of them, so this could go on nightly for the better part of the month. (Remember the first Bond flick? It was "Dr. No" in 1962.)
º National Carroll O'Connor Day: Archie Bunker was born on Aug. 2. We could all watch our favorite episodes of "All in the Family" that day and call at least one person a "meathead."
º National Shania Twain Day: She was born on Aug. 28. Why should we celebrate her? Simply because she's Shania Twain.
But let's be honest. Sean Connery, Carroll O'Connor and Shania Twain, while all deserving, don't hold a candle to Elvis.
National Elvis Day/Weekend. Let's make it happen.
