HANNIBAL, Mo. -- The potential tying run was thrown out at home plate in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Hannibal softball team lost 9-8 to Kirksville on Monday night in a North Central Missouri Conference game.
Olivia Pfeifer got on base with a one-out single in the seventh, and Taylor Simms then hit a double. However, Pfeifer was called out for leaving the base early.
Josie Zeiger then singled to left, but Kirksville's Jevin Sizemore threw Simms out at the home for the final out.
Kirksville (9-6) led 8-1 after the top of the fourth inning, but the Pirates scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth on singles from Tori Moore, Zeiger and Lauran Haye and a double from Pfeifer. After Kirksville scored a run in the top of the fifth, the Pirates tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the inning with singles from Desarae Garcia and Pfeifer, along with triples from Tori Moore and Simms. However, Zeiger and Haye both popped out with the tying run on third to end the frame.
