PALMYRA, Mo. -- New software is helping the Palmyra School District's transportation program operate more efficiently.
The Palmyra School Board heard a report about the transportation program at its monthly meeting this week.
Brian Wosman, transportation director, said the new software -- bought during the summer -- is being used not only to create more efficient bus routes but also to give bus drivers more accurate pick-up and drop-off information.
Wosman said the district runs 10 bus routes each school day, and those buses logged more than 21,252 miles from the first day of school in August through the beginning of October.
In addition, the district runs four early childhood/special education routes each school day, and those buses have traveled 1,556 miles so far this academic year.
Wosman said the district's buses also have been used to carry groups of students on 67 trips totaling 7,143 miles since the school year began.
In other action, the board heard an update on the district's Parents as Teachers program.
Kathy Nicholson, early childhood coordinator, said the PAT program serves 239 families with 323 children. Sixty-five percent of the families have at least one "high-needs characteristic," she said.
Nicholson said PAT personnel made 1,374 personal home visits and completed 335 screenings last year. In addition, the program becomes involved in providing local events for families, such as Paw Patrol Fun, Just Me and My Dad Tool Time, Kindergarten Here We Come, the Big Truck Rally, Library Summer Fun and various programs at the elementary school.
