CHICAGO -- Clair Moore and Emily Vonderheide were a set away from making it to the second day of the Class 1A girls state tennis tournament.
But the Quincy Notre Dame doubles team struggled to hold the lead.
Jerseyville's Hannah Hudson and Chelsea Maag rallied for a 3-6, 7-5 (10-3) victory in the second round of the consolation bracket, eliminating the QND duo.
Moore, a sophomore, and Vonderheide, a senior, opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kyrsten Darrough and Gracy Himelick of Flora. They were knocked into the consolation bracket with a second-round loss to Alex Arenson and Caroline Lommer of North Shore Country Day, 6-1, 6-1.
In the Class 2A, Quincy High School's Olivia Clayton was eliminated after back-to-back losses in the singles bracket.
Clayton, a sophomore, suffered a 7-5, 6-1 loss to Kyra Emmanouilidis of Palatine Fremd in the opener. In the consolation bracket, Clayton lost 6-1, 6-1 to Natalia Kochkodan of Metea Valley.
