PEORIA, Ill. -- When the final race of his prep cross country career ended, Jacob Bryan only wanted to do one thing.
"I wanted to lay down," he said. "I was pretty tired."
The rest had to wait until the Illini West senior received his medal -- the first for a Chargers runner in program history.
Bryan finished eighth in the Class 1A state meet at Detweiler Park, running the 3-mile course in a school record and personal best time of 15 minutes, 8 seconds. Athens' Wyatt McIntyre won the state title in 14:25
"I made a plan with my coach and I executed it," Bryan said. "Last year, it was my goal to medal and it didn't happen. I made it my goal this year."
Bryan knew the goal was reachable.
"I was in about 15th with a mile left," Bryan said. "And I passed quite a few people."
Pittsfield senior Eli Ten Eyck finished 18th in 15:22.
In the girls Class 3A meet, Quincy High School junior Lydia Kurfman finished 31st in 17:36. Glenbard West sophomore Katelynne Hart won the state title in 16:22.
In Class 1A, Unity senior Megan Adams finished 53rd in 19:05. Eureka's Emily Argo won the state title in 17:34.
