CANTON, Mo. -- Twice in the final minutes of the fourth quarter Saturday, the Culver-Stockton College football team's defense gave the offense an opportunity to pull off an upset.
Neither time could the Wildcats avoid a mistake.
Freshman quarterback Korbin Marcum was intercepted in Peru State territory on C-SC's final two possessions, saddling the Wildcats with a 47-42 loss in Heart of America Athletic Conference plat at Ellison Poulton Stadium.
Marcum's 16-yard touchdown pass to Irving Collier with 5:24 remaining in regulation pulled the Wildcats within five points. The defense forced a quick three-and-out, and an 18-yard by the Bobcats gave the Wildcats possession at the Peru State 46-yard line.
Marcum was intercepted on the next play.
Peru State went three-and-out again on its next possession, giving C-SC the ball at its own 35-yard line with 2:58 to go. Marcum completed three passes for first downs to move the Wildcats to the Bobcats' 21-yard line before Peru State's Justin Barnes intercepted Marcum for the second time on second down at the 15-yard line with 1:32 to go.
The Bobcats ran out the clock on the victory.
Despite the interceptions, Marcum set two single-game school records as he threw for 545 yards and six touchdowns.
He completed 22 of 57 passes, breaking the yardage mark of 523 set by Clint Grothaus against Benedictine in 2002 and the touchdown passes mark of five set by Matt Gunterman twice during the 2016 season.
However, Marcum was intercepted five times as the Wildcats were minus-3 in turnover ratio,
The Wildcats (0-10, 0-4 Heart) trailed 7-0 after the first quarter before Denzel Campbell caught touchdown passes of 42 and 21 yards. Jordan Grant's 14-yard touchdown reception gave C-SC a 21-20 lead. However, Peru State scored on a 6-yard run with 19 seconds remaining in the first half to take a 27-21 lead to the locker room.
The teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter before Peru State took a two-possession lead on Daniel Boshart's 61-yard run with 6:25 to play in the game.
Campbell caught 11 passes for 217 yards and three touchdowns. C-SC's Stephen Murphy caught 11 passes for 136 yards.
Boshart outrushed the Culver-Stockton team by over 100 yards on his own, recording 154 yards on 21 carries. He also threw for 217 yards on just 10 for 17 passing. Jake Coughlin caught six passes for 155 yards.
