MOBERLY, Mo. -- The John Wood Community College men's basketball team was seven minutes from scoring a major upset Tuesday night.

Then Moberly Area Community College showed why it's a top-10 team in NJCAA Division I.

The Greyhounds erased a five-point deficit down the stretch and picked up an 83-78 victory against the Trail Blazers, an NJCAA Division II program.

"I told the guys I thought we were really pretty good for 26 or 28 minutes," JWCC coach Brad Hoyt. "About 12 minutes, we weren't good enough."

The Trail Blazers (1-1) had two opportunities to extend the lead to eight points, only to have 3-point attempts rim out. The Greyhounds responded behind freshman point guard Alozo Verge Jr., who finished with 25 points.

"He was really good. He made tough shots," Hoyt said of the Chicago Sun-Times 2017 Player of the Year after a steller prep career at Harvey Thornton.

The Trail Blazers showed some resiliency early, falling behind 11-0 at the start. They were able to trim it to a nine-point deficit by halftime.

"It's encouraging," Hoyt said. "There were a lot of good things, just not good enough yet."

Freshman guard Gentry Whiteman led JWCC with 15 points, all on 3-pointers, while Aziz Fadika had 12 points and Mason Schlotzhauer added 11.
