HANNIBAL, Mo. -- Seven-time Emmy Award-winning actor Ed Asner will visit Hannibal in January for a single performance of his one-man comedic stage reading of "A Man and His Prostate."

Written by nine-time Emmy Award-winner Ed Weinberger, a longtime friend and collaborator of Asner's, the play is based on Weinberger's real-life experience of being rushed to the hospital for prostate cancer surgery while vacationing in Italy. During the experience, he discovers "his inner self in more ways than one ... as he prepares for surgery he doesn't want," the play's synopsis says.

"I immediately grabbed this opportunity when contacted by Ed Asner's representatives," said Joe Anderson, Bluff City Theater executive director. "I think it's wonderful he wants to perform here. That he has chosen America's Hometown for an exclusive performance speaks volumes about how Hannibal is coming into its own as a significant theater center."

Asner is best-known for his portrayal of Lou Grant, first as Mary Tyler Moore's boss on her eponymous television show and then in his own spinoff, "The Lou Grant Show." He has been performing "A Man and His Prostate" across the United States for more than a year.

The New York Post wrote that the play is "public service in a comedy format," and Show Business Weekly said it is "nonstop laughs."

"Ed Asner is a great actor and significant force in the theater community," Anderson said. "People aren't going to have much more time to see him perform live. He's 88."

The 90-minute play, sponsored by Bluff City Theater and Hannibal Regional Health System, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Hannibal High School auditorium. Tickets are now on sale and range in price from $25 to $45. For an additional $15, audience members may participate in an after-show meet-and-greet with Asner.

"(Asner) delivers this show with a skilled comedic timing that leaves audiences in tears from laughing," Anderson said. "We are so excited to have him coming."

People may buy tickets for "A Man and His Prostate" by going online to EventsHannibal.com or by calling the theater box office at 573-719-3226.
