Inside the matchup: The Cardinals' start just keeps getting better. This week, William Jewell received votes in the NCAA Division II coaches poll for the first time in program history. Thursday night's 107-86 victory over Maryville extended the best start to a season since the Cardinals went 19-0 to open the 1987-88 season when they were an NAIA school in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. Junior guard Keith Hayes and senior guard Patrick Whelan are two of the GLVC's top three scorers, averaging 20.6 and 20.1 points per game, respectively, and rank in the top 10 in 3-pointers made with 22 and 23, respectively. Junior swingman Pharroh Gordon ranks second in the GLVC and 19th nationally in rebounding at 10.9 per game. Quincy junior forward Marcus Hinton is third in the GLVC in rebounding at 10.2 boards per game, but the Hawks' bigger concern is the ability to score. Quincy ranks 14th in the GLVC in both field goal percentage (41.1) and 3-point percentage (29.5). The Hawks are shooting 58.9 percent from the free-throw line, but they aren't last in the league. Missouri-St. Louis (55.7 percent) and Missouri S&T (50.7 percent) rank at the bottom.
