CARTHAGE, Ill. -- Only five seconds remained in the game, and the Illini West boys basketball team trailed Monmouth-Roseville by two points, so it would make perfect sense to run a play for Jackson Porter, who is averaging more than 30 points per game this season.

Instead, Chargers coach Bill Rasmussen opted to use Porter to set a screen.

The play worked to perfection. Kennedy Gooding inbounded the ball from the sideline next to the Chargers' bench to Carter Boyer, and when Boyer passed the ball to Brandon Buttz, Gooding cut to the basket. Porter set a back screen for Gooding, who caught a pass from Buttz and scored and was fouled with 1.5 seconds remaining.

Gooding made the free throw to give Illini West a 45-44 victory over Monmouth-Roseville on Tuesday night.

"It was a play we had practiced several times," Rasmussen said. "We knew what to do."

Porter was limited to a season-low 13 points, but Gooding led the Chargers (3-3) with 24.

"That's how you win games, when you have a 30-point scorer willing to set a back screen for the winning basket," Rasmussen said.

The Titans took the lead late in the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer by Alan Ayala, and Porter made one of two free throws for the Chargers. The Titans' Jensen Wollbrink was fouled with 20 seconds to play and missed the front end of a one-and-one. After a timeout, Illini West ran a play that didn't work, and another timeout was called with five seconds left.
