PALMYRA, Mo. -- The Palmyra Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for its awards program.

The awards will be presented at the chamber's annual banquet Jan. 11 at Msgr. Farischon Hall. Nominations must be submitted by Tuesday, Dec. 12.

The chamber is asking the public to suggest candidates for several top awards -- Citizen of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Educator of the Year.

Susan Berti, administrative assistant, said the chamber's Board of Directors will meet Dec. 13 to vote on the nominations for the citizen, volunteer and educator awards.

Berti said the board also will choose recipients for the Business Hall of Fame Award, which recognizes longtime standout businesses; the Paintbrush Award, which recognizes a business that improved its appearance; and the President's Award, which recognizes someone who has worked diligently on behalf of the chamber.

Berti said the awards are a good way to honor people who go above and beyond in helping to make Palmyra a good place to live and work.

"It is the intent of the Palmyra Chamber to give much-deserved recognition to those who have done so much for the Palmyra community and who humbly serve without seeking a pat on the back or other accolades," she said.

Nominating guidelines are available at showmepalmyra.com/chamber.html or in forms at the chamber office in the Gardner House, the Palmyra Spectator and City Hall. Nominations should be mailed to the chamber office at P.O. Box 446, Palmyra, MO 63461 or emailed to palmyrachamber@gmail.com.

The annual awards have been a tradition in Palmyra since 1991 when the late Corbyn Jacobs, a well-known local historian, was honored as the first Citizen of the Year. The Educator of the Year award was added in 2001, and other awards were introduced later.

The winners are kept secret until announced at the banquet.

This year's banquet will begin with a social gathering at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 and then the awards program.

Tickets are $20 if bought by Dec. 30 and $25 after that date. Tickets are available at the chamber office, City Hall, the Palmyra Spectator and the HATS Restaurant, which is catering the Jan. 11 banquet.

For the first time this year, Berti said, businesses can decorate a table and display a product they sell. Table reservations can be made by calling the chamber office at 573-769-0777 or sending email to palmyrachamber@gmail.com.
