EWING, Mo. -- With the Knox County girls basketball team running out of chances Monday night, the Lady Eagles turned to freshman Alyssa Peavler.

Peavler forced a third overtime with a three-point play, then scored the first two baskets of the third extra session to help sixth-seeded Knox County upset No. 3 Palmyra with a 72-65 first-round victory in the Highland Tournament.

"We couldn't make our free throws there for a while, but we kept fighting," said Lady Eagles coach Kelsea Dorsey, whose team led by seven points midway through the fourth quarter and made 22 of 45 free throws. "But we finally got it done. Alyssa really stepped up and did a great job."

Peavler wasn't the only hero.

Savannah Mauck drained a 3-pointer to tie the score at 54 with less than two seconds left in regulation. Sidney Miller's free throw tied the score at 59 at the end of the first overtime.

After Peavler's first two baskets of the third overtime, Dorsey said the Knox County players started to believe in themselves.

"It was back and forth most of the game," Dorsey said. "We're excited about this. This is a big win for us. We haven't shown our potential yet. We want to go out there and show we can compete."

Mauck led Knox County (4-6) with a game-high 21 points, while Miller and Tadym Mason scored 12 points apiece. Robby Meyers led Palmyra with 18 points, while Megan Stone scored 16 points.
