CARTHAGE, Ill. - The first court appearance for the 17-year-old boy charged in connection with the shooting death of 19-year-old Madison Finch of LaHarpe was an emotional one Tuesday.
At least two rows of Finch's family and friends were in the Hancock County courtroom, and emotions were high as the charges were read into the record.
The boy, whose name has not been released, faces three counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery.
Hancock County Public Defender Kam Miller was appointed to represent the boy, who is being held in the Hancock County Jail on no bond. His first preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 23.
Hancock State's Attorney Jason Pohren asked the court to try the boy as an adult. That motion also will be considered Jan. 23.

Specific charges were not included in a press release.
The Illinois State Police and the Hancock Sheriff's Department made the arrest after responding to a shooting Monday at a home on the corner of Conch Drive and Terre Haute Road.
Finch was pronounced dead by Hancock County Coroner Kendall Beals at 5:22 a.m. in the home.
Beals said the preliminary cause of death is a gunshot wound.
The boy is set to make his first appearance Tuesday in Hancock County Circuit Court, and Pohren said he intends to have the case transferred to criminal court.
