HANNIBAL -- Firefighters responded to a house fire Friday morning outside of Hannibal.

Hannibal Rural Assistant Chief Kevin Smith told The Herald-Whig's news-gathering partners at WGEM that no one was in the house, which is located at 11976 Twin Acres Place, when they responded to the scene at 10:53 a.m.

Chief Michael Dobson told WGEM that the fire started in the kitchen and spread to the attic.

Dobson said the Missouri state fire marshal was called in to determine the cause. The fire was found to be accidental, the result of the homeowner forgetting to turn off a tea pot.

No one was injured, and the structure was not a total loss. The American Red Cross was called in to assist the family.
