To The Herald-Whig:
In my opinion, it is time for our country to end its involvement in Afghanistan. There is no need to expend any more precious blood or resources in a part of the world we don't understand.
Thousands of casualties and a trillion dollars have not stabilized Afghanistan. In fact, recent headlines make it appear that the country is falling further into civil war. It is time to leave the fate of Afghanistan to the people of that country.
One only has to watch a meeting of the Quincy City Council to know that resources are needed in our community and other localities throughout the country.
One project in particular comes to mind, which would benefit the entire Midwest: modernizing the entire lock and dam system on the Mississippi River and its connected tributaries. In particular it would help if containers can be shipped on barges up and down the river. This transportation project would allow farmers and manufacturers to compete more economically in the world marketplace.
