My father-in-law bought a sewing machine cabinet at an auction, and it had a tag on it that said "Webster's 316 Hampshire St. Quincy, Il." It had a phone number on it, 7382. He said back then that would have been the right amount of numbers. Anyway he is curious what kind of business was Webster's.
This question has been sitting in our inbox for some time. We've tried to find something related to a Webster's store, but haven't come up with anything solid.
In a newspaper archive search, we were able to find an ad for a large storeroom for rent at 316 Hampshire, but that was really the only references we could find, except for some available apartments for rent in the same building.
However, "People's History of Quincy and Adams County, Illinois" notes that the Eads Sewing Supply Co. at 316 Hampshire sold Italian and Swiss sewing machines, and serviced all makes and models.
It said owner John Eads moved to the location in 1958 and bought the building in 1962 from Robert Webster Sr., who first started the sewing machine store.
Anyone else have some information on the store?
