To The Herald-Whig:
There are important duties that our Adams County Board could spend time managing. Creating an environment that is business-friendly to help recruit new employers is just one of the many important functions of our County Board.
Recently introduced into committee of the County Board is a proposal to make Adams County a sanctuary county for our Second Amendment rights. Perhaps the sponsor fails to understand the oath of office that requires one to honor the laws of Illinois and the Constitution of the United States. Are we to expect another pandering proposal for each of the other nine amendments to the Bill of Rights or the additional 17 amendments to our Constitution?
This proposal is another attempt to divide us. Our Constitution is what makes our country great and protects all citizens. We encourage all citizens to read, understand and to exercise all of your constitutional rights.
"To live under the American Constitution is the greatest political privilege ever accorded to the human race," former President Calvin Coolidge said.
Besides the Bible, the U.S. Constitution is the greatest document ever written. Let us not engage in political pandering with our Constitution in hopes of getting elected.
The preamble to our Constitution reads: "We the people, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote general Welfare, and secure the blessings of Liberty to ourselves and to our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
As Americans, we need to find the common ground that binds us. That is our whole Constitution.
May God bless America.
Adams County Democratic Central Committee chairman
