Eldon and Sally Hibbard of Quincy will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary with an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. June 23 at their cottage at 2130 Harrison, No. 36B, hosted by their family. Family and friends are welcome.
Mr. Hibbard and the former Sally Burgtorf were married June 26, 1948, at Central Baptist Church.
Mrs. Hibbard is a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Burgtorf. Mr. Hibbard is a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Hibbard Sr.
They are the parents of James Hibbard (Mary) of Fort Collins, Colo., Dan (Kathleen) and Steve (Patti) Hibbard of Quincy. They have 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hibbard was a lineman for Ameren (formerly CIPS) for 45 years, retiring in 1991. He served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater from 1943-47.
Mrs. Hibbard was employed by Quincy Junior High School for 22 years, retiring as head cook in 1989.
They were active members of Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ for many years and have recently attended the Crossing church.
For many years they drove their motor home to Arizona for the winter months, where they enjoyed playing cards, block parties and making homemade ice cream. Mr. Hibbard has enjoyed raccoon hunting, racing trotting ponies and fishing. Mrs. Hibbard enjoys cooking and is an avid quilter.
They both enjoy playing cards with their friends. Family traditions include making caramel corn, homemade ice cream and large family gatherings.
The couple met on a blind date when he was home on leave.
