New faces making big contributions for Gems

QUINCY -- The Quincy Gems sent four pinch hitters to the plate during the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday.

To Gems assistant coach Pat Robles, that meant one of two things.

"We were either up by a lot or down by a lot," Robles said. "Fortunately, we were on the positive side."

It was a chance for Quincy (17-21) to give some bench players an at-bat during a 10-3 Prospect League victory over Hannibal at QU Stadium, snapping a four-game losing streak to the Hoots.

The win also gave a chance for some of the newer Gems players to make their mark.

Ryan Mantle, an all-Big East selection for Creighton this spring, has been with the team for less than a week. He hit a two-run double for a 4-1 lead in the third inning.

Playing his first game, Jake Hahn homered to right field in the fifth for a 7-1 lead. Hahn left his home in Lubbock, Texas Sunday and arrived in Quincy Monday. He said he was about to leave for vacation when he got a call from one of his coaches at St. Edward's University that a spot was open with the Gems.

"I hadn't been playing at all this summer, and all of a sudden, I'm here homering in my third at-bat," said Hahn, who played first base Tuesday. "My first couple of at-bats weren't very good. I got more what I was looking for in my third at-bat."

Left fielder Aaron Campbell has one season left at Austin Peay. This is the first healthy summer he's had after battling injuries his first three years in college.

Campbell joined the Gems three weeks ago, and now he has a 12-game hitting streak. He had a season-high three hits against the Hoots (16-20).

"This is the first year I've been able to play summer baseball," Campbell said. "Early, it was a pretty big adjustment. When I got here, I looked around and saw all of these players. There were guys from Iowa (in Kyle Crowl) and Cody Birdsong, who's a really good player. It took a little while to figure out where I was going to fit in."

The Quincy coaches don't believe that's a problem.

"We like to get guys who come in here and are going to contribute," said Robles, who was in charge while manager Rick Fraire was serving the first game of a two-game suspension. "We feel our 1 through 9 can hit the ball well. Then we go to the bench and bring several others in."

The Gems had 16 hits and also received solid pitching. Quincy Notre Dame graduate Tanner Marshall, now pitching at Maryville, scattered three hits, struck out five and walked three in the first five innings in his first decision of the season.

"(Marshall) did a great job tonight, just what we were looking for," Robles said. "He's efficient and dependable and induces a lot of weakly-hit balls. We like what we've seen from him so far."

Quincy's pitchers forced the Hoots to hit into five double plays.

"That's not going to keep you in too many games," Hannibal manager Clayton Hicks said. "Quincy got good hitting and pitching tonight. It looks like they're starting to come on again. We're struggling right now. We just need to try to weather these kinds of streaks and try to get back over .500."

The Gems and the Hoots play again at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday at Clemens Field in Hannibal.

"We've had trouble against Hannibal this year, but tonight, we were able to put it together." Robles said. "Hopefully, we can figure out what we did tonight and keep doing that."
