KOKOMO, Ind. -- The Quincy Gems' dying postseason hopes were finally extinguished Wednesday night.

Taylor Soper allowed three hits and walked just one batter in the first game of a Prospect League doubleheader as the Kokomo Jackrabbits defeated the Gems 5-0 at Kokomo Municipal Stadium.

The Gems (32-27) rebounded to win the second game 4-2, but they are 2 1/2 games behind second-place Danville (33-23) with just one game -- tonight's 6:30 contest against the Hannibal Hoots -- remaining to play. The top two teams in the West Division advance to the postseason tournament, which begins Sunday.

Soper allowed a single to Cody Klotz in the first inning, a single to Jake Hahn in the second inning and a single to Ryan Mantle in the sixth inning. He set down 13 straight batters after Hahn's single.

Gems starter Ryan Jemar pitched well, allowing two runs on four hits in five innings. Ian Walters had an RBI single in the third for Kokomo, and Zac Wilson drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning.

Reliever Luke Abraham allowed four hits and three runs while getting just one out in the sixth inning.

The Gems were limited to four hits in the second game, but two of them helped lead to all four of their runs in the third inning.

Bailey Montgomery led off the frame with a walk, and Matt Crook (who has spent most of the season as an assistant coach) reached base on an error. Francisco Rodriguez then loaded the bases with a walk.

After Mantle struck out, Klotz hit a ground-rule double to score two runs. Max McGuire then drove in Rodriguez with a sacrifice fly, and Jimmy Huber drove in Klotz with a single.

Starter Tanner Marshall allowed two doubles that led to two runs in the first inning, but he allowed just one more hit before he left the game with two outs in the sixth inning. Ryan Mathewson got the last four outs to earn the save.
