QUINCY -- A Quincy woman is accused of aggravated cruelty to an animal after police allege she did not provide proper food and water to a dog who died in her home.

Brittany L. Tears, 24, was arrested Aug. 20 on a warrant issued on charges of aggravated cruelty to animals, a Class 4 felony, and cruel treatment, a Class A misdemeanor.

Charging documents allege that Tears intentionally kept a female brindle-and-white pit bull/boxer mix dog named Nugget in a locked kennel at her residence without adequate water and food, which led to the dog's death. This allegedly took place between May 19 and Aug. 2.

The Quincy Police Department said patrol officers and the city's animal control officers started an investigation Aug. 2 after police received information that there was a dead dog in a residence at 1308 N. Ninth. After serving a search warrant that day, officers reportedly found the remains of the dog inside the kennel.

Police obtained an arrest warrant Aug. 14.

Tears posted $300 bond Friday. She is set to return to court Sept. 4 for a preliminary hearing.
