ROCK ISLAND -- The Quincy Notre Dame Raiders faced fourth down and short yardage on three occasions in the first half of Friday night's football game at Augustana College's Lindberg Stadium.

The Alleman Pioneers had them right where they wanted them.

The first two, both 4th-and-1s, were both inside the Alleman 45-yard line. QND jumped offsides each time, making it 4th-and-6 and forcing punts. Alleman followed with a touchdown each ensuing drive.

On a 4th-and-2 on the QND 39, the Raiders made the gutsy call to go for the first down, but Jack Patting broke through to the backfield for a four-yard loss.

And, again, Alleman followed with the TD.

Those three scores paved the way for Alleman's 41-21 victory. The No. 6-ranked Pioneers are 2-0 with victories over fellow parochials Davenport Assumption and QND (0-2).

"Is it a little bit of luck there? Yeah, a little bit lucky," Alleman coach Todd Depoorter said. "But we were able to make plays like that. Those kinds of things can go the other way, and then you have trouble."

Alleman quarterback Sam Mattecheck went to the air for scores after each fourth-down stop.

First, he hit Josh Timm on a 33-yard TD strike midway through the first quarter.

The Raiders tied the game on their next drive. Quarterback Ike Wiley found Johnny Ohnemus all alone for a 36-yard score at the 3:44 mark.

Alleman's next drive eventually ended up a yard from paydirt, and most people expected either Nate Sheets or Mattecheck to plunge it in. Instead, Mattecheck rolled out and had Killian Ahern all alone in the end zone for the short pass.

After the second QND offside penalty, Alleman faced a 3rd-and-18 at its own 12-yard line. Mattecheck escaped pressure and found Sheets at the 25-yard line. Sheets made one spin move and went 88 yards for a touchdown.

Following Patting's fourth-down tackle for loss, Mattecheck made it four first-half touchdown passes. This time it was Seth Sottos for a 39-yarder, giving the Pioneers a 27-7 halftime lead.

Mattecheck, who finished with 236 yards passing on 8-of-9 passing in three quarters of play, had 216 of those yards in the first half. He got his fifth TD throw in the third quarter on a 20-yarder to Jonathan Fernandez.

QND coach Jack Cornell said all of Alleman's throwing caught the Raiders by surprise.

"I'm not going to say we prepared for them to run only, but you watch film, and Alleman does run the ball hard," Cornell said. "We wanted to respond to their running game, and we did.

"There are things that I and the coaches could have done better, and we can go back and fix those things."

Mattecheck said if he's had a better game passing, he can't remember it.

"The line really worked on protection and the receivers made great plays," he said. "You put all of that together, and it all adds up."

Alleman added a sixth TD pass by backup Zach Carpita, a 10-yarder to Lakin Calloway in the fourth quarter.

QND made it 34-15 with a 60-yard drive in the fourth quarter, capped by a 1-yard run by Dalton Venvertloh. The 2-point conversion came on a Wiley pass to Jack Marth.

Venvertloh led the Raiders with 95 yards on 23 carries. He added a second touchdown, a 3-yarder with 28 seconds left in the game.
