ALTON, Ill. -- Quincy High School boys soccer coach Ron Bridal worried ever so slightly about his team's conditioning when senior forward Jaeden Smith questioned whether they had run enough in the preseason.
All worries were put to rest Saturday.
Quincy broke a 1-1 halftime tie by scoring four second-half goals to pick up a 5-2 victory over Alton at Gordon Moore Park.
"It's about finding our legs as the season goes on," Bridal said. "None of our boys were asking to come out. So I think we are in good shape."
With 17 minutes remaining in the second half, the Blue Devils' Ashtyn Erwin headed a ball that bounced over the Alton goalkeeper and Bromley Brown knocked it into the net for the go-ahead goal.
Smith finished off the Redbirds after that. He scored two goals in a 77-second span and finished with three goals and an assist. Senior forward Robby Phillips added the final goal.
"We know people are going to key on Jaeden and Robby," said Bridal, whose team is 5-0 heading into Tuesday's Western Big Six Conference opener against United Township. "If we can encourage other boys to take a more active role in the attack, we are going to be better for it."
