Plenty of opportunities but no goals for C-SC

CANTON, Mo. -- A deluge of rain could have been the precursor to a deluge of goals.

The opportunities were there for the Culver-Stockton College women's soccer team to make that happen.

The Wildcats owned nearly 90 percent of the possession in the second half Wednesday night after thunderstorms led to a 96-minute delay after halftime. However, the pressure resulted in just three shots and Saint Ambrose held on for a 1-0 victory at NX Level Field.

"We have to be consistent from start to finish," C-SC senior defender Sydnie Martin said. "I know we picked up our pace of play after the rain delay. If we would have had that same intensity in the first half, we could have gotten more shots or made more shots."

The Wildcats (3-1) outshot the Bees 8-3 and had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Saint Ambrose goalkeeper Molly McLaughlin was forced to make only three saves.

"Usually the better team gets a bounce or a call or something, but not always," C-SC coach Tyler Tomlinson said. "Credit their defense for holding their shape, keeping us wide and not allowing us in the middle. They were very organized after they got that goal."

In the 24th minute, the Bees' Katie Reitz swung a corner kick from the left into the center of the penalty area. Saint Ambrose's Morgan Whalen won the ball in the air and drove a header home for the only goal.

The fact Whalen was left unmarked made matters a little more disheartening.

"I don't know what happened," Tomlinson said. "We had some miscommunication."

It was the first goal the Wildcats have allowed off a restart or set piece.

"As a defender, that's kind of the worst feeling," Martin said. "It's up there with getting beat 1-v-1. It kind of hurts your heart."

Making matters worse, the Wildcats couldn't erase it with an equalizer.

"It was a game of gambling," Tomlinson said. "They were inviting us into their defensive third to pressure, and we were taking the invitation and maybe leaving ourselves a little more exposed defensively than we want.

"I thought with the way we were pressuring and how well we were pressuring, we'd get a goal."
