QHS runs wild to get first win; QND swept

The Quincy High School baseball team stole six bases and took advantage of eight walks on its way to a 10-0 victory over visiting Springfield Southeast, the Blue Devils' first victory of the season.

"We were running all over the place," QHS coach Randy Mettemeyer said.

John Wert set the tone when he led off the game with a walk, stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch. Wert and Ryan Taylor each went 2 for 2, while Logan Wilson went 2 for 3 with two BRI and Elias Fritz had an RBI single.

Left-hander Adam Bailey earned the victory, striking out five and allowing three hits and three walks in four innings.

Sacred Heart-Griffin 5-8, QND 4-4: A one-out rally in the bottom of the seventh inning allowed the Cyclones to pick up the victory in the opener before outslugging the visiting Raiders in the second game to earn the doubleheader sweep.

In the opener, QND tied the first game at 4 in the top of the seventh when Brendan Koren scored on a wild pitch with two outs and the bases loaded. After getting the first out in the bottom of the inning, QND reliever Brandon Miles allowed back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners before uncorking a wild pitch that allowed the winning run to score.

Joe Wade had a double as the Raiders managed just four hits.

In the nightcap, SHG scored seven runs in the first three innings, taking advantage of four doubles and a home run. QND (2-2) also had four extra-base hits with Blaise Haxel going 4 for 4 with two doubles.

Western 12, Louisiana 2: Wet field conditions at Louisiana forced the game to be moved to Kinderhook, and the Wildcats took advantage by collecting six extra-base hits in their first victory of the season.

Garrett Robbins went 3 for 4 with two doubles for Western (1-1), while Paul Nation went 2 for 3 with a triple and Brett Paxton went 2 for 3 with a double. Renn Schafer also had two hits.

Nation pitched the first three innings to earn the victory.

Macomb 17, Illini West 8: The Bombers scored seven runs in the final two innings to pull away from the Chargers in Carthage.

Illini West led 4-0 after two innings and trailed 10-8 after five innings. Zack Burling went 4 for 4 with a home run and three runs batted in, while Luke Burling and Cole Thompson each had a home run and three RBI.

Michael Lafferty went 2 for 4 for Illini West. The teams combined for seven home runs and 25 hits.

Mark Twain 13, Clopton 1: The Tigers strung together five of their 14 hits in the third inning to score seven runs in a five-inning win at Center, Mo.

Drew Tobin started the rally with a two-run single and Zach McClelland added a two-run triple. Tobin, McClelland and Joey Williams each went 2 for 3 with two RBI.

John Pryor added an RBI in a 2-for-2 day.

Jacob Lewton earned the win for Mark Twain, stiking out three batters while walking two in four innings.

Palmyra 8, Liberty 3: The Panthers collected four runs in the first three innings in a home win.

Trent Baxter and Jeremy Hultz each went 2 for 3 with a double. Baxter and Scott Bross each batted in three runs.

Hultz earned the win, striking out three batters and walking three in four innings of work.

Patrick Clark went 2 for 3 with a double for the Eagles, which scored two runs in the top of the seventh.

Unity 5, Highland 3: Zach Cook's sacrifice fly in the fifth inning gave the Mustangs the lead and Unity was able to hold off the host Cougars (0-2).

Tim Porter went 2 for 3 and Cook went 2 for 3 with a double to lead Unity (2-1). T.J. Hilgenbrinck struck out five and walked two for the win.

Canton 8, Monroe City 7: The Panthers scored two runs in the sixth to take a 7-4 lead but the Tigers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead and then the game.

Canton (2-0) got a three-hit game from Drew Ayers and two hits from Josh Fellinger.

Monroe City (0-2) got two hits each from Austin Reynolds, Kyle Kenison and Tyler Adams.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

JWCC 6-8, Danville 2-14: The Trail Blazers opened play at their new on-campus facility by splitting a MidWest Athletic Conference doubleheader.

JWCC's Josey Garnett hit the first home run at the park in helping the Trail Blazers win the opening game.

Michael Weiman and Michael Hoosen each hit home runs in a Game 2 loss for JWCC.
