Sarah Ormond struck out 12 batters in the opener and Quincy University's bats came alive in the nightcap in a 1-0, 9-2 softball doubleheader sweep of Illinois-Springfield Wednesday afternoon at Springfield.
Ormond faced only 23 batters and allowed just two hits in the opener. Ormond scored the only run of the game in the top of the first inning when Missy Weaver reached base on an error.
Weaver finished the game with two hits for QU.
The Lady Hawks (15-7) snapped a 2-2 tie in the second game by scoring seven runs in the top of the fifth.
QU banged out seven hits in that inning, including a two-run home run by Elizabeth Schnurbusch and run-scoring doubles by Rachel Trokey and Ormond.
Mary Wiedman, Ormond, Jasmyn Wentland and Jessica Wiedman all had two hits apiece for the Lady Hawks.
C-SC 4-2, Wisconsin-Oshkosh 3-4: The Lady Wildcats fought off a rally by the Titans in the bottom of the seventh inning of the opener at Pensacola, Fla.
C-SC scored all four of its runs in the top of the seventh. Melissa Goehl singled home the first run of the game and Danielle Kaltmayer followed with a three-run double.
Sara Eggleston earned the victory by allowing seven hits.
C-SC (7-10) led the nightcap 2-1 before Oshkosh scored three in the top of the sixth. Carley Thurston went 2 for 3 to lead the Lady Wildcats.
Illinois Central 10-9, JWCC 3-10: Kara Harris and Kaitlyn Dyche had two hits apiece to lead the Lady Blazers to a win in the nightcap.
Lexi Kuch relieved starter Ashton Mixer to earn the victory. Kuch also pitched in the opener and doubled in that game.
PREP BASEBALL
Troy 8, QND 3: The Raiders had only four hits, all singles, in a loss at home.
Joe Wade led QND (3-3) at the plate by going 2 for 4, while Brandon Miles and Scott Cornwell also singled. All three of the Raiders' runs came in the bottom of the seventh on bases-loaded walks by Josh Stinnett, Josh Hunsaker and Justin Stinnett.
Troy pitchers Mark Kavanagh and Nick Schell combined to strike out 13 QND batters.
Nauvoo-Colusa/Warsaw 2, Griggsville-Perry 1: Cody Harmon drove in both runs for the Vikings while Drew Reinhardt tossed a two-hitter and struck out eight batters en route to the road victory.
Ross Purchatzke added a double in the win for NCW (2-0).
Jason Hobson drove in the only run for the Tornadoes (3-1). Brian Baker and Brett Hendricks had both hits for Griggsville-Perry.
Central-Southeastern 8, Bushnell-Prairie City/Avon 3: Markus Vonholt drove in two runs and doubled for the Suns as they posted the home victory.
Vonholt allowed two hits and struck out five batters for C-SE (3-2) while Ricky Ramsey went 2 for 3.
Illini West 8, Abingdon 4: Derek Van Fleet went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI and scored two runs to lead the Chargers to the victory on the road.
Ser Whitaker pitched five innings of relief and struck out nine batters to earn the victory for Illini West (3-1). Michael Lafferty and Luke Burling had two hits apiece as the Chargers finished with 11 hits.
Knox County 16, Brashear 6: The Eagles scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to beat the Tigers in a five-inning game at home.
Zach Parrish, Parker Dixon and Brett Bryant all doubled in the fifth for Knox County. Parrish also doubled in the first inning and Daniel McMahon had two hits for the Eagles.
Brown County 12, Pittsfield 11: The Hornets scored what proved to be the game-winning run thanks to an error in the top of the seventh and then hung on for a non-conference victory at Pittsfield.
Jared Yingling and Corey Spurgeon hit home runs for Brown County, while Clint Hamilton homered for Pittsfield.
PREP SOFTBALL
Payson Seymour 6, Pittsfield 1: Alese Speckhart tossed a two-hitter and struck out six batters for the Indians as she picked up her fourth win of the season.
Jordan Epperson and Haley Epperson each had two hits and scored a run for Payson Seymour (5-0), while Dakota Flesner scored two runs. Kaity Schultz had a double for the Saukees (1-1).
PREP TENNIS
QND 9, Rochester 0: The Raiders raised their record to 3-0 with a road win.
Ian Hinkamper, Michael Bergstrom, Scott Niemann, Shane Terwelp and Karl Duesterhaus all won their singles matches in two sets.
Kevin Alte also won in singles, while doubles wins went to Niemann-Bergstrom, Terwelp-Duesterhaus and Hinkamper-Michael Hagstrom.
MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Mercyhurst d. QU: After getting out to a 2-1 lead, the Hawks let the match slip away in a 24-30, 30-26, 29-31, 30-24, 15-9 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association loss at Erie, Pa.
The Hawks, who hit .250 in the first game, were led by Shawn Brannick with 19 kills and Peter Coley with 15. Dan Dresen gave out 24 assists for QU (17-22, 0-9 MIVA) and Tanner Wright had 24.
PREP GOLF
Highland wins triangular: Tad Luebbehusen took medalist honors with a 5-over-par 40 as the Cougars won the match at Centralia Country Club with a 194.
Ethan Stewart helped Highland with a 48. South Shelby, using 46s from Kory White and Luke O'Laughlin, shot a 199 and Centralia added a 204.
