Runs at a premium in Devils' three losses

Mackenzi Fairley and Christina Goehl combined to pitch three gems Saturday.

The problem was they didn't get much run support.

While Fairley and Goehl struck out a total of 32 batters and wwalked none, the Quincy High School softball team lost three times at the Petersburg Porta Spring Softball Slam.

The Blue Devils lost to Oblong 3-2, Warrensburg-Latham 1-0 and Springfield Southeast 2-1.

Fairley struck out 15 batters, doubled and singled home a run in the top of the first inning of the opening game against Oblong. Fairley made the score 2-0 when she scored on a passed ball later in the inning.

The Blue Devils had only two hits against Warrensburg-Latham, a fifth-inning single by Kelsey Price and a seventh-inning single by Jordyn Mecklenburg. Goehl struck out nine batters and allowed three hits.

QHS (2-3) scored its only run against Southeast in the seventh. Mackenzie Davis doubled, advanced to third on an error and scored on a passed ball.

Griggsville-Perry went 2-1 in the tournament, beating Auburn 4-2 in its opener and Midwest Central 9-8 in the finale. The Tornadoes lost to Monticello 11-0.

Griggsville needed to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Midwest Central.

Devin Hurst singled and advanced to third when Miranda Whitaker reached base on an error. Both runners scored on a triple by Lexi DeSpain, who scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by MaKayla Whitaker.

The Tornadoes scored all four of their runs against Auburn in the bottom of the fourth. Hurst doubled home two runs and was followed by Abby Freeman's walk. Both Hurst and Freeman scored on a two-run single by Keesila Thomas.

Griggsville (4-2) managed only one hit against Monticello, a third-inning single by Lacy Emrick.

Illini West won the opener and lost the final two games of the tournament.

The Chargers edged Midwest Central in the opening game 5-4. Alyssa Swanson earned the complete-game win, striking out eight batters. She also went 2 for 3 from the plate.

Illini West lost the second game to Williamsville 5-3 in eight innings. Ellefritz took the loss, striking out seven.

The Chargers (4-2) also fell in the final game, losing to Porta 6-2. Swanson (2-1) took the loss, allowing only two earned runs.

Payson Cluster: QND and Payson Seymour both won a pair of games in the four-game event at Payson.

The Lady Raiders had seven doubles in an 11-0 victory over Lewistown. Elise Obert doubled twice, while Morgan Grawe, Kelli Keck, Kayley Rodriguez, Renita Bunte and Kelsey Ley also doubled. Karlee Gengenbacher went 3 for 3, and Obert drove in four runs.

Kristy Obert earned her first varsity victory by pitching a one-hitter.

A two-run triple by freshman Danielle Sanders helped lead QND to a 6-2 victory over Carrollton. Sanders' triple was the key hit in a four-run third inning.

Renita Bunte homered in the fourth and Grawe went 2 for 3. Emily McCaughey scattered five hits for QND (3-0).

Payson defeated Lewistown 4-2 and Carrollton 8-4 to stay unbeaten at 7-0.

The Lady Indians took a 3-1 run in the first inning against Lewistown as Alese Speckhart and Courtney Loos both hit RBI singles and Haley Epperson drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt. Payson scored again in the third with a sacrifice by Loos.

Alese Speckhart, who had two hits, struck out nine to earn the victory.

Payson trailed Carrollton 4-2 but rallied with a six-run sixth inning. The Lady Indians scored four runs when Dakota Flesner's bases-loaded double was misplayed.

Jordan Epperson singled home a run in the inning and Alese Speckhart drove in a run with a fielder's choice.

Pittsfield 13-20, Calhoun 1-1: The Saukees had no trouble scoring runs in a pair of five-inning victories at home.

In the opener, Pittsfield scored all of its runs in the first three innings. Kaity Schultz doubled home two runs and Traci Childers went 2 for 3 with a triple. Abby Forshey allowed only two hits in the victory.

Pittsfield's Karson Ince and Jessie Waggoner both hit bases-loaded doubles in Game 2. Abby Lipcaman, Danielle Van Winkle and Kandice Lanhum had two hits apiece for the Saukees, and Schultz pitched a one-hitter.

West Hancock Classic: The host Titans won three times in the five-game event played at Nauvoo.

West Hancock beat West Prairie 3-1 behind a pitching victory by Kerbee Koehler. Megan Skarin then earned the victory in the Titans' 13-4 win over Unity.

West Hancock wrapped up its day with a 6-1 victory over Bushnell-Prairie City/Avon behind an outside-the-park home run by Carmen Genter.

Liberty split its games, losing to BPCA 2-0 and beating Unity 14-1. Amber Wellman earned the victory against Unity.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

JWCC 16-3, Danville 2-4: The Lady Blazers beat the Jaguars in five innings in the opener and lost the night cap by one run in MidWest Athletic Conference action.

JWCC (3-7, 2-2) pounded out 15 hits in the opener. Lexi Kuch (3-4) earned the win. Sam Poppe went 4 for 4 with 5 RBI, a triple and three runs. Ashton Mixer also was perfect from the plate, going 3 for 3 with 4 RBI and three runs.

Mixer (0-3) took the loss in the second game, pitching five innings. Kuch pitched the final two innings of scoreless softball.

The Lady Blazers scored all three of their runs in the second inning. Danville scored three in the fourth and one in the fifth.
