Korby Paul went 6 for 7 as the Quincy University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Hillsdale, losing 5-0 and winning 7-4, Wednesday afternoon at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.
The Lady Hawks trailed 2-0 in the nightcap before Sarah Ormond hit a two-run home run, her sixth of the season, in the bottom of the first inning.
QU jumped out 5-2 in the fourth when Mary Wiedman scored on an error and Mary Militello singled home Paul, who went 4 for 4 in that game.
Weidman also had four hits and scored three runs in Game 2. Megan Corey pitched the first 61/3 innings for the win, and Paul faced the final three batters for the save.
The Lady Hawks (23-14) had seven hits in the opener, all singles. Paul and Ormond had two hits apiece in that game.
C-SC 7-1, MidAmerica Nazarene 6-4: The Lady Wildcats split a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Cotton Bowl.
The first game was tied 5-5 before C-SC scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jackie Clark and Cassie Fischer scored when Jessica Davis reached base on an error with two outs.
Sara Eggleston relieved Danielle Kaltmayer and Katie Thomas to pitch the seventh for the save. Kaltmayer and Clark had two hits apiece to lead the Lady Wildcats (13-17, 4-3).
C-SC scored its only run of the nightcap in the bottom of the first inning when Katelin Goddard scored on Kaltmayer's grounder.
Thurston went 3 for 3 to lead the Lady Wildcats in Game 2, while Goodard had two hits.
PREP BASEBALL
Central-Southeastern 2, Nauvoo-Colusa/Warsaw 1: Sean Grosinic scattered five hits to lead the Suns to a West Central Conference win at home.
Grosinic struck out 10 batters and walked only two. The Suns (8-5) scored in both the third and fourth innings when Jake DeRousse and Aaron Ussery both drove in runs.
Ross Purchatzke struck out eight and allowed five hits in the loss.
North Shelby 3, Atlanta 2: A two-run fourth inning gave the Raiders the lead for good in their non-conference win at Shelbyville, Mo.
Curt Hubbard singled home Michael Coe for the tying run and Alex Daniel followed with an RBI single, which scored Michael Stoneburner.
Josh McEwen and Bradley Craigmyle led North Shelby (3-3) at the plate by going 2 for 3 with doubles, while B.R. Parsons and Josh Mesmer also doubled. McEwen pitched a two-hitter, striking out eight and walking two.
Mark Twain 12, Van-Far 10: The Tigers survived a non-conference slugfest against the Indians at home.
Mark Twain took an 11-9 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Joey Williams tripled home Matthew Hardy and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Austin Leake.
Zach McClelland went 4 for 4 for the Tigers (5-2) and drove in three runs, while Williams went 3 for 4 with a triple. John Pryor led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run.
Skyler Jameson pitched the final three innings for the win.
PREP SOFTBALL
Collinsville 2, QHS 1: The Blue Devils managed only two hits in a non-conference loss on the road.
QHS's Brooklyn Logan singled in the seventh and was bunted to second by Ashley Stollberg. Logan moved up a base on an error and scored on a passed ball.
The Kahoks scored in the first and sixth innings. Mackenzi Fairley took the loss for the Blue Devils (5-6), despite striking out 10 and walking two.
Beardstown 2-6, Pittsfield 1-9: A three-run home run by Danielle Van Winkle in the fourth inning of the nightcap helped the Saukees split a West Central Conference doubleheader on the road.
Pittsfield (10-2, 2-1) trailed 6-4 before Van Winkle's home run. Van Winkle and Traci Childers both went 2 for 4 in that game, while Molly Ward doubled home a run in the sixth.
Abby Forshey pitched the first five innings for the victory before Kaity Schultz recorded the save.
Ward doubled home Schultz in the third inning for Pittsfield's only run of the opener. Ward went 2 for 3, while Childers also doubled. Schultz suffered her first loss of the season, despite striking out four and walking two.
Liberty 15, Western 2: The Eagles took advantage of five Wildcats errors to win a Pike County Conference game at home.
Liberty (6-7) trailed 2-0 before scoring six runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Eagles scored again in the third and added eight runs in the fourth.
Alexis Schaffer and Meredith Brinkman doubled for Liberty, while Rachelle Barry tripled. Barry struck out nine batters to earn the victory.
Illini West 1-9, West Prairie 0-1: Randi Gronewold went 2 for 4 with two doubles and 3 RBI to lead the Chargers to the sweep in the nightcap as they banged out 15 hits.
Cassie Folkerts had two hits and two RBI for Illini West (11-2) as they had six different players drive in runs.
Alyssa Swanson struck out six batters and allowed three hits en route to her fifth win of the season.
In the opener, Kaci Ellefritz pitched a complete game shutout as she struck out 14 batters and allowed only one hit on her way to her sixth win of the season. Kristianna Lorenz drove in the games only run for the Chargers.
Unity 16, Pleasant Hill 15: The Mustangs scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to win a non-conference game against the Wolves on the road.
Unity trailed 15-13 before tying the score with two runs in the top of the seventh.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Lincoln Land 27, JWCC 10: Connor Haxel had a pair of hits, including his region-leading seventh home run, but it wasn't enough to save the Trail Blazers from a MidWest Athletic Conference loss. Nick Magnifico also had three hits and drove in three runs for JWCC.
COLLEGE TENNIS
QU swept: Brian Silverstein earned the Hawks' only victory against Truman State in his team's 8-1 loss. That followed the Lady Hawks' 9-0 setback to the Bulldogs.
Silverstein, playing No. 1 singles, defeated Peter Bracha 6-4, 6-1.
