Lady Raiders split two at softball cluster

A morning of fieldwork allowed three softball games to be played Saturday at the Quincy Notre Dame Cluster.

Central-Southeastern dropped the opening game to Aledo 7-4, before QND split with Aledo, falling 10-1 and winning 11-6.

The second QND-Aledo game was tied 6-6 when Karlee Gengenbacher's two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning put the Lady Raiders ahead to stay. They added to their lead in the fifth when Elise Obert and Amanda Darnell scored after Kelsey Ley reached base on an error and Gengenbacher's single scored Olivia Shepard.

Gengenbacher finished the game 4 for 4, while Renita Bunte hit a solo home run in the second inning. Grawe hit a two-run triple in the first and Ley doubled in the second.

Emily McCaughey pitched shutout ball for the final four innings to go the distance for QND (9-3).

Aledo took a 3-1 lead in the first inning of the opener against QND and never looked back. Stephanie Peterson led the Green Dragons (11-4) with a 4-for-4 performance, while Alexa Dunn struck out 13 batters.

QND scored its run in the sixth when Grawe hit a leadoff triple and scored one out later on Kayley Rodriguez's sacrifice.

In the first game of the day, Aledo beat Central-Southeastern 7-4.

Aledo, which scored three first-inning runs, stretched its lead to 6-0 with a three-run home run by Brandi Anderson in the fifth.

C-SE (7-7) scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Ashley Tangerose, a two-run double by Ashley Lantz and a sacrifice grounder by Allie Kestner.

Payson Seymour 17, Western 0: The Lady Indians stayed undefeated in the Pike County Conference with a win over the Wildcats at Barry.

Jordan Epperson, Wendy Whelan and Alese Speckhart had three hits apiece to lead Payson (14-3, 5-0). The Lady Indians scored six runs in the top of the second inning behind Speckhart's two-run single and Haley Epperson's RBI double.

Jordan Epperson added a bases-loaded double in the sixth followed by Speckhart's two-run home run.

Beardstown Invitational: Kaity Schultz struck out five batters and hit a triple but Pittsfield fell in the championship game to the host Lady Tigers 7-2.

Molly Ward went 2 for 3 and drove in a run for Pittsfield.

Earlier in the day, Pittsfield blanked Brown County 9-0. Schultz went 2 for 4 with two doubles and Ward hit a triple.

PREP TRACK

Mexico Relays: Quincy High School and Hannibal placed 1-2 in the boys division of the 13-team meet.

The Blue Devils finished with 104 1/2 points, edging the Pirates who finished with 102.

QHS won with only two victories. The 3,200-meter relay team won in a time of 8 minutes, 13.2 seconds and Chris Clarkson won the 400 in 52.35.

John Anderson of Hannibal won two events -- the 110 hurdles (16.64) and the 300 hurdles (42.8). Teammate Jake Stamp won the 800 (2:02.7).

Hannibal placed third in the girls division with 88 1/2 points, trailing Kirksville (138) and Helias (98). Jessica McCullough led the Lady Pirates by winning the pole vault (9 feet, 6 inches).

QHS's girls placed seventh with 39 points. The Blue Devils were led by Stevee Nolan, who plaecd second in the 800 (2:26.6), and Kala Griffin, who placed third in the 1,600 (5:45.20).

The Blue Devils will host the QHS Invitational at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

PREP SOCCER

QND wins twice: The Lady Raiders overcame a sluggish start in their first game of the day to beat Waterloo Gibault 4-1 and Sacred Heart-Griffin 2-1 at the Sacred Heart-Griffin Tournament in Springfield.

Jennifer Adam's goal eight minutes into the second half snapped a 1-1 tie against Gibault. Erin Thomas scored her second goal of the game five minutes later for a 3-1 lead and Leigh McLaughlin scored midway through the second half.

QND (7-1-2) outshot the Hawks 16-4.

The Lady Raiders trailed SHG 1-0 at halftime. Thomas scored an unassisted goal, her third of the day, in the 55th minute. Hilary Obert scored the go-ahead goal, on an assist from Alex Reis in the 65th minute.

QHS 9, Peoria Christian 0: Six different players scored goals in the Blue Devils' non-conference shutout on the road.

Hayley Womack and Taylor Nell scored two goals apiece for QHS, which led 5-0 at halftime. Nell also made an assist, while Kelseigh Ruths scored a goal and added two assists.

QHS (9-2-1) outshot the Lady Chargers 31-4.

PREP BASEBALL

QND splits: The Raiders received a couple of pitching gems while splitting a pair of games at the Pleasant Plains Invitational. Tim Haley pitched a two-hitter in a 3-2 loss to Normal U-High, while Blaise Haxel's one-hitter led QND to a 1-0 victory over Pinckneyville.

QND scored its only run against Pinckneyville in the top of the fifth inning. Brandon Miles reached second base on an error and eventually scored on Haxel's sacrifice fly.

The only hit Haxel gave up was a second-inning single. Haxel struck out three batters and walked two.

U-High scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning. QND took a 1-0 lead in the first when Miles' sacrifice fly scored Joe Wade. After the Pioneers took a 2-1 lead, the Raiders answered in the second when Nathan Lunt singled home Scott Cornwell.

Haxel went 2 for 3 to lead QND (8-6) at the plate.

Griggsville-Perry 4-16, Calhoun 0-9: After a complete-game shutout by Brian Baker, the Tornadoes completed the non-conference sweep with a nine-run third inning in the nigthcap.

Zach Baker's two-run home run in the top of the third snapped a 2-2 tie. Lance Mountain went 3 for 4 and doubled, while Steven Risley went 2 for 3 and Brian Baker also doubled.

Brian Baker struck out seven batters in the opener while pitching a four-hitter. Brad Rumple and Brian Baker also doubled in the game for the Tornadoes (10-4).

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Missouri Valley 3-4, C-SC 2-6: A three-run sixth inning in the nightcap helped the Wildcats split a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader at Marshall.

The score was tied 2-2 until Jonathan Maestas hit an RBI double in the sixth, followed by a two-run single by Ryan Lamson.

Cody Rieger hit a solo home run in the third and Chris Rinaudo added a solo blast in the seventh. Geoff Davidson pitched the first six innings for the win and Austin Bishop earned the save.

The Wildcats (27-11, 16-10) scored their only runs of the first game in the fifth. Jaime Munoz hit a solo home run, followed by Kurt Kessler's RBI single. Brad Simmons went the distance in the loss.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

C-SC 9-8, Baker 0-0: The Lady Wildcats had 10 hits in each game while posting two shutouts in an HAAC doubleheader at the Cotton Bowl.

C-SC (15-18, 6-4) stretched a 2-1 lead in the opener with a four-run second inning. Jackie Clark and Carlie Thurston both doubled and had two hits apiece, while Sara Eggleston improved her record to 6-9 by scattering eight hits.

C-SC won the second game in five innings. Katelin Goddard, Cassie Fischer, Clark and Danielle Wilson had two hits apiece, while Katie Thomas pitched a two-hitter to improve to 5-3.

PREP GOLF

Centralia Invitational: Austin O'Bryan of Monroe City tied for fourth place individually by shooting a 79, six strokes behind medalist Shane Kressig of Salisbury.

O'Bryan helped lead the Panthers to a ninth-place finish in the 12-team field with a 372. Salisbury won the tournament with a 327. Area teams scores included Palmyra (4th, 344), Louisiana (6th, 361) and South Shelby (7th, 366).

Palmyra was led by Jon Bradney, who shot an 84, and Nathan Morris and Taylor Schubert with 85s. William Wallace led Louisiana with an 87 and Luke O'Laughlin's 90 led South Shelby.

Kirksville Invitational: Highland's Tad Luebbehusen shot a 76 to take medalist honors at the 16-team event.

The Cougars placed ninth as a team. They were helped by Craig Sutter, who placed 14th with an 84.

COLLEGE TENNIS

QU swept: Anele Novak and Jackie Ostermiller teamed up to give the Lady Hawks their only win in a 6-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference loss at Reservoir Park.

Novak and Ostermiller, playing No. 1 doubles, beat Kandice Belanger and Jaycie Schmidt 9-7. QU is now 12-11 overall and 6-7 in the GLVC and will play in the conference tournament next weekend at Indianapolis.

The QU men's team was blanked by Rockhurst 6-0 in its GLVC finale. The Hawks are now 7-16 overall and 2-8 in the GLVC.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Ball State d. QU: The Hawks' season came to an end with a 30-17, 30-17, 27-30, 30-27 loss to the 10th-ranked Cardinals in the quarterfinals of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament at Muncie, Ind.

QU (18-25) was led by Peter Coley with 16 kills and Ed Ryan with 12. Collin Cooper finished with 13 digs and Ivan Shirokov gave out 34 assists.

COLLEGE TRACK

Wildcat Open: Culver-Stockton's Zach Rosenberger turned in a winning height of 16 feet to win the pole vault at Canton, Mo.

Rosenberger's performance ranks him third in NAIA and automatically qualifies him for the NAIA Outdoor Championships.
