Quincy Notre Dame's baseball team came up with some timely hitting Saturday afternoon to beat Springfield Southeast 14-12 in the championship game of the Charlie Due Tournament at Champaign Centennial High School.

The score was tied 12-12 when Tim Haley led off the seventh inning by reaching base on an error. Haley was sacrificed to second by Ryan Stuckman and stole third. Joe Wade hit his third double of the game to score Haley and then scored himself on Brandon Miles' single.

Wade finished the game 4 for 4 and drove in four runs, while Miles was 3 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Earlier in the day, Blaise Haxel went 2 for 4 and struck out seven batters to lead QND (7-3) to an 8-2 victory over Oswego East. Scott Cornwell and Matt Welding also went 2 for 4 for the Raiders.

Illini West 14, Brown County 3: The Chargers took advantage of 12 walks and five errors to beat the Hornets in a five-inning, non-conference game at Mount Sterling.

Illini West took a 7-0 lead on a Derek Van Fleet's three-run home run in the top of the second inning. Brittin Elliott and Zach Burling both hit two-run triples for the Chargers.

Nathan Goudschaal, Quintin Bradbury and Andrew Llewellyn had two hits apiece for Brown County.

Griggsville-Perry 4, Illini West 1: The Tornadoes beat the Chargers in a game played at a neutral site, in Mount Sterling. Brian Baker earned the win, allowing two hits, zero earned runs and notching six strikeouts in five innings of work.

Drew Kennedy earned the save by pitching the final two innings. He only gave up three hits, one of which was a Luke Burling solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.

G-P (6-3) entered the top of the seventh with a 2-1 lead. Back-to-back doubles in that inning by Austin Schrader and Kennedy helped the Tornadoes add two insurance runs.

Michael Lafferty took the complete-game loss for the Chargers (6-4). He scattered eight hits, struck out 11 batters and gave up two earned runs.

Palmyra 8, Mark Twain 7: A walk-off home run from Cory Vaughn gave the Panthers a victory on the road.

The Bulldogs (2-2) threatened in the bottom half of the seventh before Palmyra turned a double play to help end the game. Mark Twain gave up five unearned runs, in part to four errors.

Jeremy Hultz picked up the win for Palmyra (4-3).

Matthew Hardy went 2 for 3 with a home run for the Bulldogs. Logan Anderson and Kris Campbell each recorded three hits.

GIRLS SOCCER

QND 1, Jefferson City 0: Brooke Burgess scored the only goal of the game with 1:53 left at QND.

Burgess tracked down a loose ball following Hannah Stroot's corner kick and scored 8 yards out from the left post.

It was the fifth win in a row for the Lady Raiders (5-0-1), who outshot the Jays 15-1.

BOYS TENNIS

Peoria Richwoods Invitational: All three Quincy High School boys tennis doubles teams placed at Peoria.

The Blue Devils' No. 1 team of Francisco Cortez and Isaac Fee placed second, while the No. 2 team of Graham MacDonald and Gavin Reed and No. 3 team of Alex Miklius and Garrett Garner both won the consolation title.

Cortez and Fee defeated Ben Honer and Corey Stumne of Belleville West 2-6, 6-3 (11-9) in the semifinals before falling to Mike Christian and Mike LaHood 6-1, 7-5 in the championship.

MacDonald and Reed beat Richwoods' David Zurgurdo and Colin Clayton 6-2, 6-3 in the consolation match. Miklius and Garner captured their consolation honors with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ian Hart and Zach Petersen of East Peoria.

QHS's two singles players -- Matt Bier and Billy Birsic -- both went 1-2, including losses in their consolation matches. The Blue Devils placed fifth as a team with 21 points, while Belleville West won the tournament with 33.

QND 9, Rochester 0: The Raiders had little trouble winning a home match to raise its dual record to 6-0.

Ian Hinkamper, QND's No. 1 singles player, blanked Elliott Batten 6-0, 6-0 and teamed up with Michael Hagstrom to blank Batten and Taylor Sexton 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.

Also winning singles matches were Michael Bergstrom, Scott Niemann, Hagstrom, Shane Terwelp and Karl Duesterhaus. The other doubles wins went to Bergstrom-Niemann and Terwelp-Duesterhaus.

PREP SOFTBALL

Payson 17-12, Brussels 2-0: Wendy Whelan led the way in the Indians' sweep in Payson. The senior went 4 for 6 on the day with 6 RBI and 3 runs scored.

Alese Speckhart (6-1) earned the victory in Game 1, which was a Pike County Conference game. She pitched all five innings in the game, striking out eight and giving up two hits.

Even though Payson pounded out 15 hits, none of them were for extra bases.

In the second game, which was a non-conference contest, Jordan Epperson shut out Brussels. She only allowed one hit and struck out six batters in the five-inning game.

Illini West 3, Brown County 0: Jordan Brooks' two-run double keyed a three-run sixth inning as the Chargers blanked the Hornets at Mount Sterling.

Christina Bostrom had two of Illini West's five hits, both singles. Kaci Ellefritz pitched the first five innings, striking out 11 batters and allowing no hits.

Jaimee Davis had the only hit for Brown County.

Titan Classic: Bushnell-Prairie City/Avon and West Hancock both went 3-1, but BPCA won the tiebreaker to capture the title at Hamilton.

After winning a game in the tournament last Saturday, West Hancock (6-1) started the day with a 4-2 victory over Liberty and a 7-4, nine-inning win over Unity. Kerbee Koehler pitched the Titans to the win over Liberty.

Liberty scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to beat West Hancock 9-8.

Alicia Dietrich led the Eagles (4-5) by going 3-3 and driving in two runs, while Amanda Bower drove in three runs. Amber Wellman struck out seven batters to earn the win.
