A basket of dish cloths on top of a dryer started a small fire Monday at Baldwin Intermediate School, 3000 Maine.

Students were not in school Monday because of Easter break, and no injuries were reported after Quincy firefighters responded at about 1:30 p.m.

A kitchen manager in the building smelled smoke and called for help. Smoke was coming from air vents on top of the building, and from doors and windows.

Firefighters entered the building and used a fire extinguisher to put out a small fire. They later carried the dryer out of the building.

Regular school functions will take place as usual today, authorities said. Assistant Chief Rob Tipton said the fire was ruled accidental.

Firefighters were told rags in a plastic laundry basket were placed on top of the dryer. It's likely the dryer control panel malfunctioned and did not turn off, which built up heat and melted the basket, Tipton said.
