Florida couple's extension request on bid to buy Rockcliffe Mansion denied; bankruptcy trustee says, 'We need to start over'

HANNIBAL, Mo. -- The future of Rockcliffe Mansion is up in the air again.

Ken and Lisa Marks, a Maplewood couple leasing the historic home, learned by e-mail Thursday that a bankruptcy judge had denied a request by James and Robin Gillette of Fountain, Fla., for an extension on their bid to buy the home.

John Hodge, a bankruptcy trustee with Weiner Weiss and Madison in Shreveport, La., had accepted a $710,000 bid by the Gillettes on Nov. 2 to buy the 13,500-square-foot home at 1000 Bird.

The Gillettes, who paid $35,000 in earnest money, had until Thursday to complete a house inspection.

Beau Hicks, director of the Hannibal Convention and Visitors Bureau, said earlier this month that the Gillettes also expressed an interest in buying Sawyer's Creek Fun Park, which is scheduled to go on the auction block Dec. 9.

Question:
Superintendent Lonny Lemon said the idea of disbanding the Building, Finance, Curriculum and Policy committees was being done on a short-term basis so the district could meet deadlines for proposed life-safety projects. He expects the traditional committee system to be restored early next year. Was the disbanding of the committees a good idea?
