CAMP POINT — The casual observer might have mistaken West Hancock as the undefeated team early in Saturday night's game against Quincy Notre Dame.
The Titans began the 15th annual Lady Panther Classic championship game outhustling and outscoring QND with a 13-6 start.
The Lady Raiders recovered by scoring the next 13 points to take the lead for good. That helped them stay undefeated with their 63-46 victory over West Hancock to win the 10-team tournament.
It is QND's second straight Lady Panther Classic championship and third in the last four years.
"We increased our energy level," said QND coach Eric Orne, whose team is 16-0.
"We didn't come out to a championship game with a lot of energy. ... It just took kind of a wake-up call a little bit."
West Hancock's lead evaporated with two starters — leading scorer Marley Hall and point guard Lindsey Buckert — on the bench with two fouls for the final 12 minutes of the first half.
"It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that if (QND) had their best player on the bench what the game's going to be," West Hancock coach Ken Schuster said.
Hall scored West Hancock's first six points of the game, giving the Titans a 6-2 lead with 5:42 left in the opening quarter.
"Our kids didn't get to play the same type of game that I think QND did," Schuster said. "QND's a fine, excellent basketball team. But I don't think anyone can sit here and say, 'Gosh darn it, they're that much better than West Hancock,' when West Hancock has their best two players on the bench."
QND's Karlee Gengenbacher (21 points) drew both of Hall's fouls in the opening minutes.
"I've got to get better about that," Hall said.
West Hancock led 13-6 with two minutes left in the first quarter.
QND junior Chloe Barnes scored two straight baskets, starting what turned out to be a 13-0 run.
Leigh McLaughlin scored all five of her points in that pivotal second quarter, in which the Lady Raiders outscored the Titans 19-8.
Gengenbacher led QND with six points in the second quarter.
Gengenbacher attributed a lack of effort to the Lady Raiders' slow start.
"We were just going through the motions and not really playing hard," Gengenbacher said.
Gengenbacher scored QND's first four points in the second half and nine of the Raiders' first 11 after halftime.
"We knew we had to come out good for the second half," Gengenbacher said.
Barnes finished with 14 points and junior Natalie Siebers added 10 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Lady Raiders.
QND will try to protect its perfect record when the Lady Raiders travel to Springfield on Tuesday and Pana on Thursday.
Central-Southeastern (15-6) lost its second straight game with a 43-33 setback to Havana in the third-place game.
The Ducks (13-7) outscored the Lady Panthers 15-4 in the final quarter to earn the victory. Ali Schwagmeyer led CSE with 14 points in the loss.
The following area players made the 12-player Lady Panther all-tournament team: QND's Barnes, Renita Bunte and Gengenbacher; West Hancock's Hall and Emily Mast; CSE's Ali Schwagmeyer and Katelyn Moore; Liberty's Lucy Cramsey; and Brown County's Sam Kassing. ... Hall (offensive MVP), Bunte (defensive MVP) and Schwagmeyer (outstanding hustle) earned individual honors.
