Free throws allow Mark Twain to survive in double overtime

Zach McClelland made six free throws in overtime and Steven Phillips sank 3 of 4 from the charity stripe to help the Mark Twain boys basketball team knock off New Haven 49-42 in double overtime Saturday night.

"We were clutch with our free throws in overtime," Mark Twain coach Nic Zenker said.

The Tigers led by seven points going to the fourth quarter after holding the Shamrocks to just two third-quarter points. However, New Haven scored 15 points in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 28 and force overtime.

Both teams were held to six points in the first overtime, but Mark Twain (6-2) outscored New Haven 14-7 in the second extra period to net the victory.

McClelland led all scorers with 23 points, while Phillips had 11 points and Jared Runyon added 10.

Payson Seymour 67, Monroe City 40: The Indians clamped down defensively, holding the Panthers to just two points in the first quarter. Payson led 39-17 at halftime.

Shane Wellman scored 26 points for the Indians (8-5), while Curtis Stout added 10. Tanner Buckman finished with 12 points for the Panthers (2-5).

Illini West 54, West Prairie 50: Down by 13 at halftime, the Chargers outscored the Cyclones 37-20 in the second half to pick up their third win of the season.

Jacob Schmudlach led the Chargers with 15 points as he hit three 3-pointers. Ser Whitaker added 10 points for Illini West.

Clark County 59, Knox County 40: Michael Brennan led the Indians with 16 points, while Javis Vineyard added 14 points as he knocked down four 3-pointers. Clark County (3-1) outscored Knox County 39-23 in the second half.

Knox County forward Dennis Dent led all scorers with 22 points.

New Salem 84, Quincy Home School 50: Justen Bridgeman had four 3-pointers and scored 26 points for the Saints. He also grabbed five rebounds as Quincy Home School suffered its seventh loss.

Girls Basketball

Liberty-Payson 42, Pleasant Hill 24: The Eagles held the Wolves to just two points in the first and third quarters, respectively, as the defense paved the way to the road victory.

Lucy Cramsey led all scorers with 22 points, 15 coming in the third quarter as Liberty (15-3) outscored Pleasant Hill 17-2 in the frame.

Central-Southeastern 62, Western 12: Lady Panthers freshman forward Alivia Nelson scored in double figures for the first time this season, finishing with 14 points on the road.

Caitlin Heiman had 12 points, and Dawn March added 11 for C-SE (9-5). Nicole Bordewick led Western (0-13) with 10 points.

Prep Wrestling

Argenta-Oreana Tournament: Quincy Notre Dame had four wrestlers place in the top eight in their respective classes with 125-pounder Matt Ostermiller and 145-pounder Codey Stephens both taking third. David Musholt (152) and heavyweight Matt Hugenberg both finished seventh.

Women's Basketball

Culver-Stockton 75, Hannibal-LaGrange 47: The Lady Wildcats picked up their second victory of the season, leading by 14 points at halftime. Breezy Guymon had a game-high 20 points and five assists for C-SC, while Jamai Letcher added 16 points.

Shundrae Faulk led HLG with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
