After starting foul, Raiders finish fair

KEOKUK, Iowa -- Quincy Notre Dame entered the final minute of Tuesday's game committing three times as many fouls as Keokuk.

At that time, the Chiefs also made 21 more trips to the free-throw line.

But Keokuk's failure to convert those opportunities, only making 12 of 25 attempts, helped the Raiders escape with a 54-49 win.

QND senior Tim Bearden drained a go-ahead 3-pointer for the second straight game to give the Raiders (13-10) a 52-49 lead with 59 seconds left.

"He just steps up and hits an ice-water shot," QND coach Scott Douglas said. "... He's not bashful and he's not afraid to shoot that shot."

Keokuk senior James Vandenberg missed a 3-pointer 13 seconds later on the ensuing possession and QND senior Nick Phillips hauled in the rebound.

Since the Chiefs (15-6) only had two team fouls -- the Raiders had 10 -- it took 32 seconds to pick up the five fouls necessary to send the Raiders to the free-throw line.

When Matt Welding missed the single-bonus free throw with 14 seconds left, it gave Keokuk one more chance at tying the game.

But the Chiefs turned the ball over with 1.3 seconds remaining before fouling Tim Haley with .1 left. Haley made both shots in the one-and-one situation to seal the win.

QND missed all five of its previous free-throw attempts.

Haley and Phillips were unlikely heroes in the win. They combined to score eight of QND's 13 fourth-quarter points.

Haley scored six points after entering the game with only four points in the 2008 portion of the season.

"I thought (Haley) played solid the entire game," Douglas said. "He didn't make mistakes. He was tremendous on defense and I'm really proud of him. That's a kid that really works his tail off everyday and tries to get better and has gotten better. ... Tonight he got to showcase it."

Foul trouble and Michael Lieber missing his third straight game due to illness gave Haley and Phillips increased playing time.

Phillips made 7 of 7 field goals, tying Welding for team-high honors with a season-high 14 points. That matched the amount of points Phillips scored in the previous nine games combined.

Phillips also grabbed 8 rebounds, twice his previous best this season.

"It wasn't pretty all-around as a team but I just tried to step up and do what I could -- fill some shoes," Phillips said.

Trevor Galbreath scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Chiefs in the loss.

Notes: Phillips also was perfect from the field on Dec. 21 against Palmyra. He made 6 of 6 shots en route to 12 points. That is the only other time Phillips hit double figures this season. ... Keokuk's Logan Piper scored all 12 of his points in the first half. In the second half he went 0 for 5 from the field and missed a free-throw attempt. ... Bearden had one 3-pointer in every quarter. ... Lieber, one of the Raiders' first players off the bench, returned to school this week and might be able to practice next week. He has been sidelined with mononucleosis. ... James Hurt, who entered the game averaging 15 points per game, only scored six points for Keokuk. ... This was QND's final road game of the regular season.
