First quarter recap
It didn't take long for one thing to become apparent at Redbird Arena: Marshall ceneter Adrienne GodBold was going to be a handful for Quincy Notre Dame.
The 5-foot-11 junior scored the Commandos' first eight points as Marshall dominated the opening minutes.
She had a pair of putback baskets and teammates Sarah Rogers, Terranika Reynolds and Jasmine Poteete added putbacks of their own as Marshall controlled the boards. In the first 4 minutes, 39 seconds of play, Marshall collected nine offensive rebounds to build a 14-6 lead.
However, QND stormed back by slicing through Marshall's press to get easy buckets. The Raiders were also solid at the free-throw line early on as they made all six of their free-throw attempts, a trend that wouldn't continue later in the game.
Karlee Gengenbacher made all four of her attempts, while Natalie Siebers knocked down two. A jumper by Gengenbacher with 53 seconds left gave the Lady Raiders a 19-18 lead after the first quarter.
In what would become a subplot for the rest of the game, GodBold was pulled off the floor with 1:35 left in the quarter after picking up her second foul. Marshall led 18-14 when she went out. QND scored the last six points of the quarter to take the lead.
The Lady Raiders' offense was hurt by a rash of early turnovers, too. QND made seven turnovers in the first quarter, which Marshall converted into six points.
