2008 All-Area First Team Capsules
Chloe Barnes, G, 5-9, Jr., QND
The move across town proved fruitful as Barnes earned first-team all-state honors from the Associated Press and the Chicago Sun-Times. She averaged 15.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.8 steals while shooting 52 percent from the field.
"Chloe is a lock-up defender and a scoring machine," QND coach Eric Orne said.
Renita Bunte, G, 5-8, Sr., QND
Bunte epitomized the term "clutch" in the postseason, hitting key 3-pointers in the regional and sectional. She led the area with 44 3-pointers, while averaging 11.0 points to go along with 4.9 assists, 4.5 steals and 4.3 rebounds per game.
"Renita was our team leader. She did whatever it took for us to win," QND coach Eric Orne said.
Lucy Cramsey, G/F, 5-7, Jr., Liberty-Payson
It should come as no surprise Cramsey was named to the all-tournament team in all three events the Eagles played. She averaged 14.2 points and 9.5 rebounds, posting 20 double-doubles. She also averaged 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals.
"Lucy is just an amazing athlete who works hard on and off the court," Liberty-Payson coach Mark Brassfield said.
Alyssa Duffy, F, 5-9, Sr., Unity
It was a historic season in many regards for the Lady Mustangs. Not only did they win the first regional title ever, but Duffy eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career. She averaged 15.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.9 steals.
"Alyssa is a great athlete and team player who stepped into a needed leadership role this year for us," Unity coach Johanna Voss said.
Karlee Gengenbacher, F, 5-9, Soph., QND
Considered an undersized post player, Gengenbacher didn't play like it. She averaged 15.5 points and 5.8 rebounds, while leading the Lady Raiders in scoring in six of their seven postseason games. Her 57.0 field goal percentage was among the area's best.
"Karlee's play in the post was phenomenal, especially in the postseason," QND coach Eric Orne said.
Randi Gronewold, F, 5-11, Sr., Illini West
Overshadowed by all-staters during her first two varsity seasons, Gronewold took center stage this year. Named the MVP at the Beardstown Lady Tiger Classic, Gronewold averaged 16.3 points and 8.6 rebounds, shooting 54 percent from the field.
"She was the heart and soul of our team," Illini West coach Zach Keene said.
Marley Hall, F, 6-2, Soph., West Hancock
Voted one of the top 20 sophomores in the state by several recruiting analysts, Hall led the Titans to the Class 2A state championship by averaging 20.3 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. She shot 57 percent from the field and earned first-team all-state honors.
"She is the best player in the state of Illinois," West Hancock coach Ken Schuster said.
Erin Mayes, F, 5-9, Sr., South Shelby
Tabbed the Clarence Cannon Conference Player of the Year, Mayes led the Lady Birds to a second-place finish at the Class 3 state tournament. She started every game in her varsity career -- 112 total -- and averaged 15 points per game this season.
"She has helped the other girls a lot. She has been a four-year starter and understands things a little better," South Shelby coach Milly Rash said.
Tori Niemann, F, 5-10, Soph., Canton
Niemann is only getting better with age. She led the area in rebounding this season, pulling down 10.3 boards per game. She also was among area leaders in scoring (17.3 points) and field-goal percentage (57.8 percent). She also averaged 3.4 assists and 3.3 steals.
"She is a special talent and the great thing she is only a sophomore," Canton coach Seth Minter said.
Ali Schwagmeyer, G/F, 5-10, Sr., Central-Southeastern
Schwagmeyer left an indelible mark on the Lady Panthers program. While averaging 18.5 points, 9.4 rebounds and 4.2 steals, she earned first-team all-state honors and set the school's career scoring, rebounding, steals and 3-point shooting marks.
"She means more to our team than any other player in the area means to theirs," C-SE coach Matt Long said.
