Triples lead QHS softball past Central-SE

The Quincy High School softball team tripled its fun Monday afternoon in beating visiting Central-Southeastern 5-0.

The Blue Devils (2-0) broke the game open thanks to three sixth-inning triples. Lindsay Womack and Jordyn Mecklenberg had run-scoring triples in the inning, while Kelsey Price also tripled and scored.

That offense was more than enough for pitcher Mackenzi Fairley, who pitched a one-hitter. Fairley struck out 13 and walked just one to improve to 2-0.

Natalie Rossmiller and Christina Goehl each had run-scoring singles for QHS.

Deandra Bockhold got the only hit for C-SE. Allie Kestner took the loss for C-SE, striking out five while walking seven.

QND 3, Griggsville-Perry 2: The Raiders held off the Tornadoes for the road win.

Emily McCaughey struck out four to lead the Raiders.

MaKayla Whitaker had two doubles, while Kaytlin Vinyard added a triple for Griggsville-Perry. Aja Hurst also had a double for the Tornadoes.

Payson Seymour 15, Brown County 6: Jordan Epperson and Dakota Flesner each had three hits to lead the host Indians to a non-conference win.

Epperson drove in two runs and scored four times, while Flesner drove home one run and scored twice. Wendy Whelan added two hits for Payson (4-0).

Alison Behymner had two hits and scored twice for Brown County.

Illini West 6, Liberty 2: The visiting Chargers scored four times in the fourth inning to take the win from the Eagles. Jordan Brooks, Alyssa Swanson and Randi Gronewold who each doubled to lead the charge for Illini West (2-0).

Liberty (0-1) got a double from Lucy Cramsey.

Pittsfield 10, Carrollton 4: Abby Forshey struck out nine and worked around 11 walks to give the Saukees the win in their season opener.

Pittsfield (1-0) got two hits each from Abby Stinston and Danielle Van Winkle. Jessie Waggoner added a double for the Saukees.

PREP SOCCER

Quincy 6, Galesburg 0: The Blue Devils ran their Western Big Six Conference winning streak to 16 games by outshooting the Silver Streaks 62-1. Quincy (5-0, 1-0 WB6) has outshot its opponents 156-18 in five games.

The Blue Devils also posted their fifth straight shutout.

"We're stopping the attack at midfield and not letting it get within 20 yards of our goal," Quincy coach Bill Sanders said. "Our defense is getting into the attack, too. That's what we're wanting."

Freshman Hayley Womack had a goal and two assists, while sophomores Kristen Muehlenfeld and Taylor Nell each had a goal and an assists. Katie Runyon, Amy Schwartz and Lydia Disseler scored Quincy's other goals.

PREP GOLF

Hannibal d. Monroe City 174-195: The Pirates claimed four of the top five places in a win at Norwoods Golf Course.

Hannibal's Michael White and Monroe City's Austin O'Bryan tied for medalist honors with 42. Hannibal (2-0) claimed the win with scores from Josh Cookson (43), Aaron Quinn (44) and Chase Clayton (45).

Jordan Botkins (48), Andrew Reynolds (52) and Brantley Nowlin (53) rounded out the Panthers' scorecard.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Quincy 3-1, Lindenwood 2-2: Two hits were all the Lady Hawks needed to split a doubleheader against Lindenwood in non-conference play at North Campus Field.

In Game 1, Jasmyn Wentland's solo home run in the first inning put QU on top. The Lady Hawks (13-7) would not earn another hit until the sixth inning, but put together two runs in the fourth on a RBI ground out from Audra Heimer and a fielder's choice by Megan Corey.

Erin Gregory had QU's only other hit.

The Lady Hawks were held hitless in Game 2, tying the score at 1 in the third on an RBI ground out from Cristina Hughes. Lindenwood took the lead for good in the sixth with three straight singles.

Corey earned the win for QU in Game 1, while Torie Bunzell picked up the save. Sarah Ormond took the loss for the Lady Hawks in Game 2.

MEN'S TENNIS

Hawks win weekend trio: The Quincy University men's tennis team claimed its first Great Lakes Valley Conference wins since 2005, sweeping Newman 6-3, Saint Joseph's College 6-3 and Lewis University 9-0 over the weekend.

Brian Silverstein won five of six matches, claiming three singles victories and pairing with John Irish for two doubles wins.

The GLVC wins over Saint Joseph's and Lewis are the first for the Hawks since the 2004-05 and are their most conference wins since the 2002-03 season.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

QU wins seventh straight: The Lady Hawks stretched their winning streak to seven matches, defeating Newman 6-3, Saint Joseph's College 6-3 and Lewis University 6-3 over the weekend.

Anele Novak won five of six matches played, pairing up with Jackie Ostermiller to win all three No. 1 doubles matches.

Ostermiller won all three No. 2 singles matches.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

D'Youville def. QU: The Hawks suffered their fourth straight loss, dropping a five-game non-conference match in Buffalo, N.Y.

D'Youville won by scores of 24-30, 30-28, 28-30, 30-28, 17-15.

The Hawks have lost eight of their last 10 matches to fall to 16-20.

QU continues its spring break trip today with a game at Medaille College in Buffalo.
