Pitcher bails out QND in win

Relief pitching efforts from Justin Stinett helped the Quincy Notre Dame baseball team to an 8-5 victory at Palmyra on Tuesday afternoon.

"The difference today was really Stinett's pitching," QND coach Chris Martin said. "We gave up five unearned runs in the second, then he came in and shut them down."

Stinett gave up just one hit in four innings while striking out four. His efforts were matched by QND's hitting, which scored a combined five runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Brandon Miles went 2 for 3 with a triple and two runs batted in for QND (3-2), while Tim Haley hit a second-inning home run.

Moberly 7, Hannibal 6: The Pirates were unable to throw a baserunner out at home in the bottom of the seventh inning, enabling the host Spartans to pick up the North Central Missouri Conference victory.

Tied at 6, Moberly opened the seventh by getting its first two hitters on base with a double down the left-field line and a bloop single. After an intentional walk, Pirates reliever Ian Hatton induced a ground ball up the middle for a force out at home.

Hatton induced another grounder in the next at-bat, but the runner from third beat the throw home.

Hannibal, which scored three times in second and twice in the fourth, got doubles from Neil Hugenberg and Alan Ward. Jay Mosley went 4 for 4 with three RBI and a run scored for the Pirates (1-1).

QHS 8, Macomb 2: Patience at the plate paid off for the Blue Devils, who managed just four hits but took advantage of 13 walks to pick up their second victory at home.

Quincy (2-2) scored three times with two outs in the first inning by taking advantage of four walks. The Blue Devils scored another run in the second without a hit and went up 5-2 in the third before getting their first hit.

A two-run single by Logan Wilson with one out in the third inning made it a 7-2 game. Wilson went 2 for 2 with two walks, while QHS lead-off hitter John Wert walked four times and scored three runs.

Andrew Moulton picked up his first varsity victory, allowing two runs and two walks over five innings, while striking out one. Zach Smith pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

Illini West 14, Biggsville West Central 2: The Chargers racked up seven runs in the first two innings in a five-inning win over the Heat at Carthage.

Derek VanFleet went 4 for 5 for Illini West (2-1) with two doubles and 2 RBI. Matt Kissinger and Luke Burling each added three hits and Michael Lafferty went 2 for 5.

Ser Whitaker also had 2 RBI for the Chargers.

Lafferty earned the win, striking out five batters while walking two in four innings.

Silex 9, Mark Twain 4: The Tigers gave up four runs in the middle innings in a loss at Silex. Kris Campbell collected two hits, including a double, for Mark Twain (1-1). Logan Anderson finished 1 for 3 with 2 RBI.

Brown County 6, West Central 4: The Hornets scored five third-inning runs to hold off the Cougars in a Western Illinois Valley Conference game at Mount Sterling.

Brown County (3-2, 3-1 WIVC) pieced together the third by taking advantage of three West Central (0-2, 0-1) errors.

Andrew Llewellyn picked up the win for the Hornets, striking out six batters while walking three. Justin Dozier had a double for Brown County.

Unity 12, Liberty 9: A first-inning grand slam from the Eagles' Josh Tenk gave Liberty an early lead, but the Mustangs scored five unanswered runs in the middle innings in a win at Liberty.

Tim Porter launched one of two home runs for the Mustangs, finishing 2 for 4. Josh Gronewold picked up the win, striking out eight batters.

Tenk finished 3 for 4, including a double. Wade Murfin went 2 for 4 with two doubles for the Eagles.

Nauvoo-Colusa/Warsaw 11, Hamilton 7: The Wildcats scored eight runs in the third inning in a West Central Conference win at Nauvoo.

Ty Runge went 2 for 3 for N-C/W (1-0). Blake Lomax picked up the win, while Josh Riley took the loss.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

John Wood 16-24, Spoon River 11-4: The Blazers collected 35 hits in a doubleheader sweep of MidWest Athletic Conference games at Spoon River.

Levi Graham finished with five hits, two home runs and nine RBI on the day for JWCC (6-13-1, 3-1).

The Blazers hit five home runs in the twinbill. Graham, Connor Haxel and Brock Jones hit homers in the opener, while Haxel and Graham homered as part of a 22-hit attack in the nightcap.

QU 3-2, Mankato State 0-3: The Hawks split a doubleheader at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

Kory Coe hit and RBI single and scored two runs for the Hawks in Game 1. Brian Schmelter earned the win, striking out five batters while allowing no runs in six innings. Tyler Martin picked up the save.

In Game 2, Joe Palumbo had a RBI ground out and home run, but a seventh-inning error by QU allowed Mankato State to score the game-winning run. Chris Scoggins went 2 for 2 for the Hawks (10-10).

Culver Stockton 3-2, Baker 0-1: The Wildcats pushed their winning streak to 10 games with a sweep over Heart of America Athletic Conference foes Baker at Nichols Field.

A two-rund single in the first inning by Kevin Steinhardt gave C-SC (16-5, 8-4 HAAC) a 2-0 lead in Game 2. Damian Gatti (4-0) picked up the win, striking out four batters while walking one.

In Game 1, the Wildcats pieced together three fifth-inning runs on RBI hits from Steinhardt and Lucas Cramsey, while Kurt Kessler scored on a passed ball.

Kyle Nash earned the first game win, striking out seven while walking none.
