Freeman goes above and beyond call of duty

Griggsville-Perry baseball coach Darren Perdun needed his ninth-place hitter to just reach base in a tied game in the bottom of the seventh.

His bottom-of-the-order guy did a little more than that.

Sophomore outfielder Cody Freeman connected on a 2-1 pitch down the right field line for a walk off homer to give the Tornadoes a 5-4 home win over Brown County.

"I really just needed him to get on base to set up the rest of the lineup," Perdun said of Freeman. "But I did turn around to the guys on the bench and say 'I wouldn't mind seeing him just go ahead and end it.'

And that's what he did."

The Hornets (4-4) fought back after trailing 4-1 in the top of the sixth, pounding out four consecutive singles to tie the game.

Jackson Yingling led Brown County with two hits and an RBI, while Quinten Bradbury added two singles.

Freshman Jason Hopson capped a three-run fourth inning with a two-run single for Griggsville (5-3), while Drew Kennedy finished the game with a double and RBI.

Nauvoo-Colusa 12, Illini West 2: Two big innings by the Vikings helped them run away the West Central Conference North Division win at LaHarpe.

Behind three hits from Max Gnann and three RBI from Mitchell, the Vikings (4-0 overall, 2-0 WCC) scored six runs on four errors in the third, and pushed across five more runs in the sixth.

Derek Van Fleet suffered the loss for the Chargers (5-3, 1-1), allowing nine runs -- five earned -- in 5 1-3 innings.

Monroe City 1, Unity 0: Tyler Adams did it all for the Panthers.

The senior pitcher, who had the game-winning RBI in the sixth, held the Mustangs to five hits while striking out 11 to post the shutout win at home.

A scoreless game heading into the bottom the sixth, Monroe City's Collin Williams reached on an error to start the frame and advanced to third on a stolen base and pass ball.

Adams capped the inning with an RBI single to give the Panthers the eventual win.

Freshman Chase Hildebrand, who led the Mustangs (3-4) by going 2 for 3, doubled with two outs in the top of the seventh, but was stranded after Adams struck out to the end the game.

South Shelby (2-1) also got a two-run home run from Matt Patterson in the fifth, while Greenwell finished with half the Cardinals hits on a 4 for 4 night.

Trailing 3-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Pleasant Hill's Stephanie Moesch led off the inning with a triple and scored on the following groundout to get on the board.

A leadoff home run by Christina Hannel to start the seventh cut the deficit in half, while Dana Johnston followed with a double and eventually scored to pull within one run.
