Moore of the same: Cardinals pitcher dazzles
BY THE HERALD-WHIG STAFF
For Kyler Moore and the South Shelby baseball team, there's nothing like following a no-hitter with a win over a county rival.
The junior allowed only one run on three hits, while the offense did just enough for the Cardinals to post a 3-1 win over North Shelby at Shelbina.
"It was his second straight great performance," South Shelby coach Zack Grassley said. "He used his defense really well and this is a big win for us."
Moore, who was coming off a no-hitter against Atlanta, struck out eight and walked two. His one hiccup came in the top of the sixth -- a solo home run off the bat of Josh McEwen.
South Shelby tallied single runs in the first, fourth, and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead before the Raiders (1-2) got on the board.
Mitch Greenwell led the Cardinals by going 2 for 3 with two stolen bases.
Highland 13, Monroe City 2: An eight-run fourth inning by the Cougars proved to be too much as they collected the Clarence Cannon Conference win at Ewing.
In a game where Highland was considered the away team with the Panthers still unable to play on their home diamond due to construction, the Cougars (2-3 overall, 1-0 CCC) came through with a 14-hit performance.
Highland starter Jeremy Platt went three innings to pick up the win, teaming with Jesse Sparks to surrender one hit.
Tyler Adams had the lone hit for the Panthers.
Mark Twain 9, Wellsville 2: A trio of pitchers for the Tigers struck out 11, while Zack McClelland finished a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate to grab the win at home.
Starter Skylar Jameson went six innings and struck out eight to pick up his first win.
Kris Campbell and Nathan Smith added two hits for Mark Twain (3-2).
Palmyra 7, Western 6: The Panthers never lost focus despite trailing early to grab the win on the road at Barry.
After allowing three runs in the bottom of the first, Palmyra (5-3) scored two runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings to complete the comeback.
The Wildcats (1-4) jumped on starter Josh Eberhardt, who exited after allowing three runs before recording two outs.
Nick Smyser and Jeremy Hultz (4-0) worked the final 6 1/3 innings in relief, allowing three runs while striking out nine.
Jason Cox finished with two hits and two RBI for Palmyra (5-3), while Eberhardt and Cory Vaughn chipped in two hits apiece.
Keaton Baker went 2 for 3 with a double for Western, with Devin Ruble also contributing a double.
Pittsfield 7, QHS 2: Five runs in the bottom of the first inning proved to be enough for the Saukees to pick up a home win.
Junior right-hander Henry Johnson tossed a complete-game, six-hitter for Pittsfield (10-2), striking out six and walking four.
Pittsfield's Bryce Frieden finished 2 for 4 with a double, while sophomore Michael Johnson also collected two hits.
Stuart Roderick led the Blue Devils (2-8) with a double.
Illini West 5, Liberty 0: Brittin Elliott dominated on the mound, scattering two hits while striking out nine for the complete-game home win.
"It was his first start of the year and he was on today," Illini West head coach Todd Porter said of his senior right-hander. "He got a little run support early and that really helped."
The Chargers (7-4) received a two-run single by Derek Van Fleet in the first to jump out 2-0. Van Fleet added a solo homer in the sixth to cap the day, going 2 for 2 at the plate with three RBI.
Sophomore catcher Stefan Flynn added two hits for Illini West.
Sam Ormond finished with both of Liberty hits -- both singles.
Brown County 16, Rushville 1: A 13-run second inning propelled the Hornets to the easy win at home.
Nathan Goudschaal had three hits, including a home run and double to finish with three RBI for Brown County (5-5). Sophomore Grant DeWitt added a double and three RBI, while fellow sophomore Justin Dozier also had a double.
Andrew Llewellyn (2-1) picked up the five-inning win, allowing two hits while striking out seven and walking one.
