Illini West outlasts Palmyra in 29-run barnburner

The Illini West baseball team came out on top in an offensive showdown against Palmyra, winning 16-13 on Tuesday in a game that featured 31 hits.

Illini West took an 11-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth when Palmyra struck back by scoring five runs to cut the lead to four.

The Panthers made another comeback in the seventh off a Trent Baxter grand slam, but it wasn't enough as the Chargers matched them hit for hit.

Mat Kissinger and Cole Thompson both hit doubles for the Chargers and Zack Burling hit a home run.

Nick Waters picked up the loss for the Panthers. Trevor Farias and Nick Smyser each had doubles.

QHS 11, Unity 3: The Blue Devils (3-19) snapped a 17-game losing streak despite managing only five hits at home.

Unity was led by Tim Porter, who had two hits and an RBI, and Carl Peter, who recorded a triple and an RBI.

South Shelby 15, Highland 1: Strong hitting and good defense propelled South Shelby to its ninth win of the season.

South Shelby's Kyler Moore pitched a complete game three-hitter, picking up his fourth win.

The Cardinals compiled 13 hits, including a grand slam by Jordan Bowman and doubles from Kelsey Moore and Bryce Johnston.

Platt picked up the loss for the Cougars.

Griggsville-Perry 8, Central-Southeastern 2: Central-Southeastern rallied in the sixth inning but it wasn't enough as Griggsville-Perry picked up its 20th win.

Austin Schrader led Griggsville-Perry with two solo home runs. Drew Kennedy threw six scoreless innings and picked up the win.

North Shelby 9, Paris 7: One big inning is all it took for North Shelby to pick up its sixth win of the season at Paris.

North Shelby scored eight runs in the fourth inning thanks to a Michael Stoneburner grand slam and a two-RBI single by Josh McEwen.

Mark Twain 16, Community R-6 6: Jacob Lewton earned the victory in relief and drove in three runs on two doubles for the Tigers, who scored 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Jared Runyon also drove in three runs for Mark Twain (10-5) while Logan Anderson and Zack McClelland finished with three hits and two RBI apiece.

The Tigers finished with six doubles, including two by Anderson, and Lewton picked up his fifth win.

PREP SOFTBALL

QHS 2, Rushville-Industry 0: Mackenzi Fairley was a one-person wrecking ball for the Blue Devils as she tossed a three-hit shutout while striking out eight batters at home.

Fairley, who earned her eighth win of the season, also recorded a double and triple at the plate. Stephanie Schwartz finished 2 for 3 with a stolen base for the Blue Devils (9-15)

Liberty 9, Pleasant Hill 1: The Eagles used a four-run first inning as a springboard for their third straight win.

Ashley Huddleston and Kelsey Martin had three hits apiece for Liberty (12-10), while Lucy Cramsey had two hits.

Rachelle Barry struck out 11 batters for the Eagles.

West Hancock 2-4, West Prairie 1-3: The Titans won a pair of one-run games to sweep a doubleheader at home.

Megan Skarin won a pitchers' duel in the opener by scattering five hits. The game was tied 1-1 until West Hancock (12-9) scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

In the nightcap, West Hancock trailed 3-0 before scoring all four of its runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Kerbee Koehler drove in the game-winning run after Becca Elschlager doubled home two runs earlier in the inning.

Jacksonville Routt 10, Brown County 0: The Rockets scored in every inning of the Western Illinois Valley Conference game at Jacksonville.

Brown County (1-23) had only four hits.

Payson Seymour 5, Griggsville-Perry 3: Jamie Epperson hit a bases-loaded, two-RBI single for the Indians in a three-run sixth-inning rally as Payson Seymour wrapped up first place in the Pike County Conference.

Alese Speckhart earned her 12th victory of the season for the Indians (12-6, 6-0).

Addie Freeman scored two runs for the Lady Tornadoes (13-9, 3-2) while MaKayla Whitaker finished with two RBI.
