Rally not enough, Wildcats sent to loser's bracket

By THE HERALD-WHIG STAFF

After waiting nearly a day to complete the opening-round game of the NAIA Region V Tournament due to rain, the Culver-Stockton College baseball team could not manage to pull out the comeback.

The Wildcats fell 6-3 to top-seeded Missouri Baptist at the Lou Brock Sports Complex at Lindenwood University. They now jump to the loser's bracket in the double-elimination tournament, and were scheduled to face William Jewell today at 9 a.m.

After allowing five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning right before the rain fell on Wednesday, the Wildcats rallied in the ninth yesterday.

Trailing 6-0 after a solo home run from the Spartans in the seventh, Lucas Cramsey led off with a single for C-SC (30-15) and scored on a Jamie Munoz double to right-center.

Kevin Steinhardt followed with a double to right-center to push the score to 6-2, with pinch-hitter Zach Miles singling to left to place two on with no out.

Jason Payne reached on a walk to load the bases, but a double play and groundout scored only one run to end the game.

Brandon Daudt (6-3) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings.

PREP SOFTBALL

Liberty 5, Pittsfield 4: A run-scoring single by Lucy Cramsey in the top of the seventh broke a tie game and gave the Lady Eagles a Pike County Conference win on the road.

A leadoff error by the Lady Saukees -- their sixth of the game -- in the seventh allowed the eventual winning run on base. Ashley Huddleston singled to put runners on the corners with no outs.

After Huddleston was caught stealing, Cramsey hit a bloop single in front of a drawn-in outfield to plate the go-ahead run.

Amber Wellman (6-3) shut Pittsfield down in the bottom half of the inning to pick up the win.

Wellman finished with five strikeouts and no walks for the Lady Eagles (13-10 overall, 4-2 PCC), who also received a triple from Kelsey Martin.

Abby Stinson led Pittsfield (22-6, 4-2) with two hits, including an RBI double in the third.

Central-Southeastern 12, Griggsville-Perry 8: An eight-run third inning sealed the win for the Lady Panthers, who capitalized on shaky defense to post the win at home.

Trailing 2-1 after the Lady Tornadoes scored two in the top of the third, C-SE pushed the lead to 9-2 and then 12-6 after five.

Devin Hurst's three-run triple in the fourth for Griggsville (13-9) capped a four-run inning. The Lady Tornadoes added two runs in the seventh before Allie Kestner (6-12) worked out of a jam to pick up the win.

Deandra Bockhold led the Lady Panthers (9-16) with two hits, including a triple.

Griggsville, which saw seven players collect two hits, was led by Hurst, who finished with a double and a triple for four RBI.

C-SE has won two of its last three games after dropping 10 in a row.

West Hancock 18, Western 0: Shawnee Dickerson had three RBI, while sophomore Marley Hall finished 2 for 2 with two RBI as the Titans grabbed the win at Nauvoo.

Starter Megan Skarin (8-4) went the distance, striking out six and walking none for West Hancock (15-8), which has won five straight games.

Illini West 4, Macomb 2: A three-run fifth inning made the difference in the Chargers' non-conference win on the road.

Kaci Ellefritz drove in three runs for Illini West, while striking out 12 batters, walking one and allowing four hits.

Cassie Folkerts had two hits for the Chargers (21-6).

Beardstown 2, Payson 1: Beardstown broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning on a Kristen Lindley ground ball.

Payson's Wendy Whelan took advantage of two errors with an RBI single of her own to tie it at 1-1. Beardstown responded with the game-winning RBI single in the fifth inning.

Alese Speckhart allowed four hits and struck out nine.

PREP BASEBALL

Nauvoo-Colusa/Warsaw 18, Liberty 3: With so many games to play in a short amount of time, Nauvoo-Colusa/Warsaw needed all the innings they could get from Ty Runge, who made his second career start against Liberty.

"We needed him to throw at least five innings and he did just that," NCW coach Rich McGhghy said.

Runge threw five innings for a complete game, striking out nine and walking only one. It was Runge's first win of his varsity career.

NCW made sure that Runge had plenty of offense backing him up as their bats stayed hot. Cameron Mitchell and Ross Purchatzke each had two doubles, Drew Reinhardt had a triple and a double and Max Ganan added a double.

"We've had a different mentality at the plate. I call it ampin' up in the box. (The players) are just excited to drive in runs," McGhghy said.

GIRLS SOCCER

Chatham Glenwood 6, QHS 1: The Blue Devils (14-4-2) avoided a shutout with Lydia Disseler's unassisted goal in the 77th minute.

QHS was outshot 25-2 and trailed 4-0 after 18 minutes.

BOYS TENNIS

QHS d. Jacksonville: The Blue Devils swept the Crimsons 5-0 as Mat Bier and Billy Birsic each won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0.

The No. 1 doubles team of Isaac Fee and Fran Cortez won their match 6-3, 6-1.

The No. 2 doubles team of Graham MacDonald and Gavin Reed won 6-3, 6-0 and Garrett Gardner and Robert Hernandez won 6-3, 6-2.
