The John Wood Community College men's basketball team raced out to a 41-10 lead late in the first half and hammered the Hannibal-LaGrange 83-32 Friday night in its season opener during the Fairfield Inn/Comfort Inn Shootout at the Student Activity Center.
JWCC shot above 50 percent in both halves, finishing the game shooting 53.1 percent (34 of 64), while forcing 27 turnovers. Brylin Brown led the Trail Blazers with 17 points, while Jurgen Lico added 13 off the bench.
JWCC outrebounded HLG 39-21 and was led by Will Carr's 10 boards. Courtney Blakes and Trevor Galbreath handed out six assists apiece.
Matt Leach led the Trojans (1-1) with 12 points.
The Trail Blazers host Kirkwood -- an 81-75 overtime winner over Lincoln in Game 1 -- at 4 p.m. today.
Drake 69, Quincy 47: The Lady Hawks shot just 28.1 percent from the field in an exhibition loss at Des Moines, iowa.
Quincy, which was 16 of 57, trailed 45-32 when Courtney Shuman made a layup with 11:27 left in the game. After that, the Bulldogs went on an 11-2 run, taking a 56-34 advantage on a free throw by Rachael Hackbarth with 7:50 left.
Shuman was the only Lady Hawks player scoring in double figures, finishing with 10 points to go with nine rebounds.
QU, which committed 24 turnovers, was outrebounded 42-40.
The Lady Hawks wrap up their exhibition schedule at 5:05 p.m. Sunday at Bradley.
HLG 2, William Woods 0: The Lady Trojans outshot the Owls 18-8 to advance to the American Midwest Conference Tournament semifinals.
Leslie Gordon scored the first goal in the 38th minute on an assist from Fernanda Miacci. HLG (7-8-1) scored again 11 minutes into the second half when Miacci scored on an assist from Chelsea Reutenauer.
HLG will play its semifinal match on Monday.
QU d. Kentucky Wesleyan: The Lady Hawks celebrated Senior Night by snapping a four-match losing streak with a 25-13, 25-18, 25-19 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory at Pepsi Arena.
Taylor Jacobs led QU (7-20, 4-9) with nine kills, while Lyndsay Kooi with 28 assists.
The Lady Hawks close their season at 3 p.m. today against Southern Indiana.
